Inez Arlene (Haglof) Pluhar went home to be with the Lord on March 28, 2017 in her home surrounded by her loving family. Our beautiful mother was victorious in her battle with cancer. She is without pain and at peace with Jesus where there is cancer no more.
Inez was born in Miles City, Montana on March 4, 1933 to Axel and Elna Haglof. Her family was blessed to help her celebrate her 84th birthday a few weeks prior to her passing with her requested Red Lobster dinner, ice cream cake and card games.
The first four years of her life were spent living on Frozen Dog Creek which is 12 miles north of Rock Springs, Montana. She lived there until the age of four, when they moved to the Elof Johnson place – only four miles north of Rock Springs on the U-All Road. She attended first through third grade in Jordan, Montana where she boarded with her aunt Gladys (Strand) Austinson. Inez boarded out all of her school years due to poor road conditions and not any schools located close to home.
Inez spent fourth through sixth grade at the Hillside School located between Cohagen and Rock Springs. Grade seven was spent at the Rock Springs School (where she boarded with the teacher Mary Wilson), and grade eight through high school was in Miles City. She graduated as class valedictorian from Custer County High School in 1951, where she served as Senior Class President.
Following high school, Inez started a job at Montana Dakota Utilities working as a cashier. She worked there for two years until she met her husband and started her career as homemaker and ranch wife.
On June 21, 1953 Inez married her husband of 63 years, Art Pluhar. For their honeymoon, they headed to Alaska in a ’52 Ford car but only made it as far as Saskatchewan. In crossing the border, it was discovered that Inez had packed one suitcase completely full of shoes. They resided in the Cohagen and Jordan areas, often living in the teacherage of whatever school Art was teaching in at the time. In 1964, they finally settled on the U-All Road. Inez and Art lived in Garfield County their entire 63 years of marriage.
Inez was a servant to her community, actively involved in the Rock Springs Community Hall events, and was a dedicated 4-H leader. A faithful and devout member of the Trinity Lutheran Church Rock Springs, Inez even hosted church services in her own home the last five years when there was no longer a church building available in the community. Inez served on the Garfield County election board until the last couple years of her life. She was also a trained weather observer of the National Weather Service for many years.
An adoring mother, Inez loved baking goodies for her family, and was diligent in sending cards and remembering special occasions. Her children remember picking potato bugs in her huge potato patches, her homemade maple bars, and that she was the master of making Swedish pancakes. She was solely devoted to family activities, making many trips up and down the road to make sure her children never missed out on 4-H activities, confirmation classes at church, music lessons, or basketball games in Cohagen. She was fully supportive of all the high school activities as well, whether it be FFA, FHA, or music concerts. She instilled in her children the idea that they should work hard and always do their best.
Inez was a gracious host and found the good in everyone. A tireless supporter who dedicated her life to her family and friends, Inez constantly gave sacrificially and without complaint. You never left her house without a full stomach, a few firm back slaps with her hugs for the road, and a “call me when you get there!”
Inez also had a large extended family of “kids and grandkids” that she always treated as her own and spent countless hours following their activities. Regardless of the team colors, she enjoyed showing her support while cheering them on from the sidelines, bleachers or grandstands.
Inez and Art loved to attend community dances and would play cards to all hours of the night (when she would occasionally catch a nap between hands!). She loved attending the events of her grandchildren, and traveled to Alaska and Texas for their graduations and weddings.
While writing her autobiography at the age of 15, she had this to say: “I think that if the future holds no worse than the past has held, I will have an enjoyable life.”
Inez is survived by her husband, Arthur Pluhar, and 5 children: Dennis (Jane) Pluhar of Rock Springs; Diana (Lloyd) Ruis of Billings; Darwin (Jenny) Pluhar of Canyon, TX; Debbie (Jim) French of Pompeys Pillar; and Darrin Pluhar of Ekalaka and Rapid City, SD. The lights of her life were her grandchildren: Jessica Ruis, Jennifer (Hill) Ruis Anderson, Joe (Lauren) Pluhar, Janelle (Steven) Ruis Grimes, Marshall Pluhar, Zane Pluhar, Rachel Pluhar, Logan Pluhar, Ben French, Elizabeth French, Janisse Ruis, and her one and only great grandchild, Adam Pluhar. She is also survived by her sisters, Elvera Neuhardt and Annalise (Jim) Willson both of Miles City, and many loving nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Axel and Elna, her brother Stan Haglof and grandson Mark Pluhar (Darwin and Jenny).
Visitation will begin on Sunday, April 2, 2017 at 1:00 p.m. at Stevenson & Sons Funeral with family receiving friends from 4:00-6:00 p.m. followed by a prayer service at 6:00 p.m. Funeral services will be held on Monday, April 3, 2017 at 2:00 p.m. at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Miles City.
