In Memory Of

Ingeborg E. Howard, age 92, of Miles City.

March 14, 1927 – October 3, 2019

Ingeborg Ernestine Howard passed away at Holy Rosary Extended Care facility in Miles City on October 3, 2019. She was 92 years of age.

She was born on March 14, 1927 in Miles City, MT, to Olaf and Anna (Block) Kelly. Mom attended rural schools in Powder River County and graduated from Custer County High School. She attended the Junior College, and because of a shortage of teachers during the war mom was given an emergency teaching permit and started teaching at the south Stacey School.

Ingeborg married Robert “Bob” Howard on August 20, 1946 while he was home on leave from Fort Knox. After Bob returned home from the service, she interrupted her teaching career in 1948 to raise their children, Jerald, Rose, Doris, James and Ralph. Mom resumed teaching in 1961. She taught at numerous rural schools in Powder River, Custer and Garfield counties, ending up at Pine Hills School in Miles City, from where she retired in 1989. During this time she also continued her own education, going on to earn bachelors and masters degrees in education.

After retiring, Ingeborg taught the 55-Alive class for over 11 years and she volunteered with the Custer County Network Against Domestic Abuse. She was a member of the Retired Senior Volunteer Program, ASARP, Delta Kappa Gama, the National Education Association, and the Montana Education Association. Mom was a member of the Range Riders Reps, Southeastern Montana Retired Teachers Association, and President of the Sons of Norway in Miles City for more than 10 years. She was named Outstanding Volunteer in 2001.

She is survived by her son Jerry, daughter Doris (Roy) Holloway and her son Ralph (Bev). She is also survived by 10 grandchildren and 15 great-grand children, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Mom was preceded in death by her parents, husband Bob, daughter and son-in-law Rose and Clarence Moats, son Jim and sister Ola Lue Newcomer. In lieu of flowers, memorials in Mom’s honor may be made to the United Christian Church, 1006 S Strevell Ave, Miles City, MT 59301; Range Riders Museum, 443 Business I-94, West Main Street, Miles City, MT 59301 or to the charity of one’s choice.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, October 10, 2019 with the family receiving friends from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home in Miles City. A prayer service will follow at 6:00 p.m. Funeral services will be held on Friday, October 11, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. at Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home in Miles City. Interment will be held at a later date in the Eastern Montana State Veteran’s Cemetery. Condolences may be sent to the family by visiting: www.stevensonandsons.com.

My sympathy to Ingeborg’s family. I loved that lady. She and her husband were part of the fiddle group my dad was in, so they were friends with my parents. They came to Alaska twice and came to visit me each time. Ingeborg was a lovely lady. I’m sure she will be missed.

I did not know Ingeborg but my mom (Irene Gresens ) did and talked about her and Bob fondly ( talked a lot about when they were all younger ) . Before my mom passed she and Ingeborg got to have a good visit at my moms 90th birthday party . I know if my mom was still with us she would have extended her condolences

  15. Jerry and Joyce Strobel says

    October 9, 2019 at 8:47 pm

Jerry and I had the blessing just recently visiting with Ingeborg at the Range Riders Museum dance. What a delight it has been over the years of many contacts with her. Even though there would be lots of weeks between our times of visiting, we were amazed at how well she remembered who we are. A super blessing for all those involved. The summer after my first year of college I had the delight of getting to stay for a week with Mr. and Mrs. Howard when they lived in Otter Creek country. Not only did I enjoy this time it was a very interesting experience for the gal who was from a big city and had not ever been in such isolated country. She and I were teaching Bible school for a week—five days—ten lessons—and a program with the children and their Bible memory verses and lessons and lots of special songs about Jesus. Bob and Ingeborg encouraged us and were there for whatever we needed. Then, when my Mom, Marie Benge, was at Extended Care she and Ingeborg and I had the most special visits. Can’t you just see us all smileing and enjoying? We pray that all of you will stand strong in the Lord as you celebrate her life, Jerry and Joyce Strobel

We are sad to here of Ingaborg’s passing. We are out of the country on vacation and won’t be able to attend services. I have very fond memories of attending many Montana Education Association events with Ingaborg. We will miss her smiling face at church.

  19. Caroline Fleming says

    October 11, 2019 at 8:23 am

Ingeborg was a rare and precious jewel. She nearly always had a smile on her face and a sparkle in her eyes. But when she saw injustice, when she felt others were treated badly, watch out! She will be sorely missed. I am glad she is reunited with her beloved Bob. God bless her family and friends in this time of mourning.
