Irene Cecelia (Herauf) Quinlan, 77 of Miles City, died peacefully at her home with her family by her side on Saturday November 16th, 2013 following a hard-fought battle with cancer.
Irene was born March 31, 1936 in Dickinson, North Dakota the youngest daughter of John J. & Cecelia (Kuntz) Herauf. She graduated from Dickinson High School and moved to Denver and then to Miles City to work as a CNA at Holy Rosary Hospital.
On February 17th, 1959 she married her love James Jay Quinlan. To this union five children were born, Kevin, Diane, Carol, Tamara, & Jane.
Following Jim’s trucking career, the family moved to the Hook Ranch north of Rosebud in 1974 where they continued to raise the family. In 1982 they moved to the Newman Ranch south of Jordan, where she flourished as a cook for the many ranch hands who adored her delicious meals. After returning to Miles City several years later, she again became active in providing health care and worked many years at T.L.C. and Parkview personal care homes.
She is survived by her 5 children, Kevin (Teri) Quinlan of Miles City, Diane (Robert) Rainey of Miles City, Carol Molstad from Loveland CO, Tamara (Loren) Spillum of Billings & Jane Lamb from Forsyth. Her 12 grandchildren, Josh & Taneasha Quinlan of Belgrade, MT, Amber Rainey, A.J. Rainey, & Ashley (Cotton) Lee all of Miles City, Nathan, Garrett, & Nash Molstad from Loveland CO, Shelby & Sean Spillum of Billings, Tori (Josh) Jonas from Killeen TX & Kori McMillan of Rosebud. Irene was also looking forward to meeting her first great-grandson, Tanner Jonas to be born later this month.
She is also survived by her brother George (Florence) Herauf of Bismark, ND and her sister Ida Perzinski of South Heart, ND.
Irene was preceded in death by her husband James, her parents John & Cecelia. Also, her brothers Joseph, Jacob, Valentine, Anton, Pius, Leo Alfred, Herbert, & Michael Herauf as well as her sisters, Katie Kostelecky, Eleanore Marthaller, & Mary Ann Jurcich.
Irene’s hobbies included crocheting, collecting angels & bells, nurturing the plants and flowers around her house, and spending time with her loving family. She will be remembered as a strong-willed, humble and caring person. She was truly a lady and some would say an angel and will be missed by her friends, especially Diann Suda and Marci Lopez as well as numerous members of her church and community.
The family will welcome visitation on Thursday, November 21st from 5-7pm and to be followed by a Rosary at Stevenson and Sons Funeral Home in Miles City. Funeral services will begin on Friday the 22nd at 11am at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Miles City. Interment will follow at the Custer County Cemetery with a reception to follow at the Sacred Heart Parish Center.
Irene’s wishes would be that memorials and/or donations be made to the AMC volunteer driver services. She and all her family greatly appreciated their extreme generosity.
