Funeral services for Irene Ulven will be at 7:00 P.M. Sunday, September 14, 2003 at The Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Gillette, Wyoming with Pastor Sonja Brucklacher officiating.
Burial and graveside services will be at 2:00 P.M. on Monday, September 15, 2003 at the Sunny Slope Cemetery in Mott, North Dakota.
Irene Ulven, age 68, died Thursday, September 11, 2003 at the Campbell County Memorial Hospital in Gillette, Wyoming after a courageous battle with cancer.
Irene Deloris Ulven was born the daughter of Otto and Elizabeth (Klein) Schmitt on December 5, 1934 in Mott, North Dakota. Irene attended grade school in Mott, North Dakota. She graduated from Mott High School in 1953. After high school, Irene went to college and became a member of the Beta Sigma Phi Sorority. She married Arlen Auen in 1954 in Mott, North Dakota and moved with her family to Bismarck, North Dakota where she worked at the Motor Vehicle Department. In 1964, she moved to Williston, North Dakota with her family and again to Tioga, North Dakota in 1965. She was a Girl Scout Leader and neighborhood advisor of the Girl Scouts. While Irene was in Tioga, she was a member of the Auxiliary Legion Post and started The Jr. Auxiliary Legion Post. She also volunteered for Jr. Bowling Advisor for 4 years. She moved with her family to Watford City, North Dakota in 1974 where she drove semi-truck for Tru Oil Company for 3 years until she was in an accident and she broke her neck. She then became a secretary for the same oil company after she recovered. She & Arlen moved to Fairview, Montana, where she was a secretary for Misco Supply. They later divorced in 1981. In 1984, she married Alvern Ulven in Sidney, Montana. Mr. and Mrs. Ulven lived in Fairview, Montana and Kimball, Nebraska prior to moving to Gillette, Wyoming in 1990. She went to work at the Flying J Truck Stop as a cashier and later worked in the office. Mr. and Mrs. Ulven then divorced in 1994. The last couple of years she worked for the Senior Employment Program and was an ambassador at the Cam-Plex. Irene was involved in many activities and occupations during her life. Irene enjoyed doing ceramics, cross-stitching, plastic canvas, reading, and having coffee with her friends.
Irene is survived by one son Arlen Otto Sonny Auen Jr. of Denver, Colorado, one daughter Debra Zentner of Key West, Florida, 2 granddaughters Jessica (Chris) Hruby and Amanda Zentner of Warroad, Minnesota, one brother Arnold and wife Janet Schmitt of Mott, North Dakota, one sister Luella and husband Ray Ridl of Dickinson, North Dakota, and several nieces, nephews, and friends in Gillette, Wyoming.
Irene is preceded in death by her parents and grandparents.
