Irene Agnes Sloan, a Miles City resident, passed away on October 10, 2016 at Butterfly Homes Assisted Living in Billings, Montana. Irene celebrated her 99th Birthday in June with her family at her side.
Irene was born June 20, 1917 to William and Anna Kearin in Ramona, South Dakota. She married Arnold J. Sloan in Crosby, North Dakota prior to making their home in Miles City, Mt. Arnold and Irene raised eight children in the family home where Irene lived until she was 95 years of age.
Irene was a talented seamstress throughout her life, creating custom clothing for family, friends and clients. She had no formal training, but taught herself the skills and techniques needed to create everything from wedding dresses, to Scottish kilts, to cheerleading outfits and doll accessories. Irene loved bright colors and working with a variety of fabrics and textures. She was an amazing crafter and enjoyed stitchery until the time of her death.
Irene was a member of Sacred Heart Parish and St. Ann’s Circle. She volunteered for numerous organizations throughout the years. She was honored for her lifetime of service to the community by the Miles City Chamber of Commerce as the 2012 Senior Volunteer Citizen of the Year.
Irene was very proud of her Irish heritage and culture. Many may remember the smell of Irene’s homemade cinnamon rolls that would draw the neighbors from every direction. In later years, sporting events like NFL football and NASCAR occupied many hours of her time, along with staying current with the present political scene. She also loved HGTV and called the Property Brother’s “her boys.”
She was preceded in death by her husband, Arnold J. Sloan, her loving children William P. Sloan and Kathleen K. Combs, and her daughter in law, Terri Moses Sloan. Three brothers and one sister also preceded her in death.
Irene is survived by her children: Mary Annette Bossert (Dan) of Littleton, CO; Nanci Sloan Cummings of Wilsonville, OR; Marlene S. Axlund (George) of Casper, WY; Dean A. Sloan of Billings, MT; Elisabeth Sloan of Milwaukee, OR; and, Ardell Breed (Greg) of Casper, WY. She is also survived by her sister, Genevieve Reinicke of San Diego, CA, and daughter-in-law, Jessica Sloan of Stanford, MT. She has seventeen grandchildren, thirteen great-grandchildren and numerous very special nieces and nephews.
An enterprising woman of undaunted strength, talent, and creativity; Irene will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

Prayers and blessings to Irene’s family – Verlin and I both so much enjoyed visiting with Irene – she completed some sewing projects for us and we loved taking her garden produce during the summertime. We enjoyed visiting with her so much. We lost track of her when she moved from Miles City – but she has always been in our thoughts and prayers. Verlin and Bernadette (Flemming) Miller.

Ted & Pat Mix Family says
We will miss Aunt Irene especially at our Kearin Family Reunions. Everyone was amazed at all the hand-made items she donated to our family auctions. Even though she couldn’t be at the last family reunion in person, her family helped her make a video, so in a way, she was there. I am still amazed that she lived to be 99+ and was still doing stitchery. I don’t think the word quit was in our parents’ vocabulary. She was a special lady and will be missed but she will live on forever in our Irish hearts. Sympathies and love to our cousins–Annette, Nanci, Marlene, Dean, Liz, Ardell, Jessica and their families.
