Isabel Elsie Powell Williams, age 95 of Broadus, MT, passed away May 13, 2005 at the Powder River Manor in Broadus, MT.
Isabel was born September 15, 1909, in Chamberlain SD, the oldest daughter of Vernon L. and Katie Marenda Powell. She attended elementary school at Powell near Biddle and Ranch Creek schools. Isabel attended high school in Powder River County and Yakima Washington and graduated in 1927. She went to teaching college at Eastern Montana College. Her first teaching job was at Brodston School in 1928. She taught at 6 to 7 rural schools in Powder River County from 1928 to 1960.
On February 17, 1929, she married Thomas G. Williams and they moved to Illinois and Indiana area where the first two of their four children were born. In November of 1932, they returned to Powder River County where they lived the remainder of their lives. In the fall of 1962, she started the first private kindergarten program in Broadus. She worked at the county library from 1966 to 1979, when she retired. Upon retirement she traveled with her husband.
She was an active member of the Powder River Congregational Church where she taught Sunday school for many years. She was a Girl Scout leader and volunteered at the museum and took part in many activities at the senior center. As a fifty plus member of the Order of Eastern Star, she was a Past Worthy Matron and was on the board for the Rainbow Girls.
Isabel is survived by four children; Thomas L. Williams (Johnie E.) of Broadus, MT., E. Loyce Cossitt of Broadus, Loren A. Williams of San Antonio, TX, Kenneth L. Williams(Catherine) of Derwood, MD; two sisters Gladys Powell Frank (Harold), and Arletha Powell Drexel; three sister-in-laws; Retta Powell, Marie Powell, and Betty Williams Miller (Sam) thirteen grandchildren; Pamela F. Williams Boyd (Greg), Patricia A. Williams Reeves (Alan), Rosemary Williams Shubert (Kenneth), Jacob T. Williams, John C. Williams (Carolyn), J. Vernon Cossitt (Laura), Frank E. Cossitt (Darla), Katie E. Cossitt Nalivka (Lyle), Daniel J. Cossitt (Marty) Terri Williams King (Tom), Amy Williams Downing (Chris), Joan N. Williams Drew (Rod), Anne M. Williams, twenty eight great grandchildren: Josh Boyd, Jennifer Boyd Garwick, Julie Boyd Maxey, William Reeves, Bradley Reeves, Emily Reeves Howard, Tiffany Shubert, Alexander Shubert, Alishia Shubert, Dustina Williams, Johnathan Williams, Patrick Williams, Mike Cossitt, Matt Cossitt, Lori Cossitt, Jeremy Cossitt, Scott Cossitt, Stefan Cossitt, Sam Cossitt, Josh Cossitt, Jamie Cossitt, J.P. Nalivka, Tosha Nalivka, Mariah Cossitt, Travis Williams, Tia Westover, Justin Downing, Ashley Downing, seven great great grandchildren: Gabrielle Garwick, Mark Reeves, Kami Reeves, Caterina Howard, Caydon Howard, Keegan Shubert, & Brandon Cossitt and numerous nieces, newphews, cousins, and a host of friends. Isabel is preceded in death by her husband Thomas G Williams, parents Vernon L. and Katie Marenda Powell; Brothers Elwin Powell, Leslie Powell (Inez), Charlie Powell, Lawrence Powell, in-laws Mabel Williams Bradshaw (Dutch), Nettie Belle Piper (Marion), John Williams (Nell), Bud Drexel, daughter-in-law Jeanie Hughes Williams and son-in-law James C. Cossitt.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, May 19, 2005 at Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home in Broadus from 1 to 6pm. Funeral services will be held on Friday, May 20, 2005 at 2:00 p.m. at Powder River Congregational Church. Interment will follow at the Valley View Cemetery in Broadus.
