In Memory Of

Jacklyn “Jackie” Washington, age 86, of Broadus

August 31, 1932 – June 15, 2019

On the morning of June 15, 2019, Jacklyn “Jackie” Washington passed peacefully in her home surrounded by family.

Jackie was born August 31, 1932 in Ekalaka, MT to Glenn “Jack” Talkington and Doris Irene Hubbard. The middle child and only daughter; she had an older brother Fallace and younger brother Larry. As a young girl she attended country school through the eighth grade; then boarded out with the Dean family to start high school in Ekalaka. She later graduated from Lodge Grass in 1950. Never afraid of hard work she successfully managed the Cashway Café and later owned the Big Sky Bar with J.O. for twenty-six years. When not working she enjoyed life to the fullest. For many years the summers would include; camping, boating and fishing. Often times taking family members along, a fun time was had by all. Jackie loved to fish whether it was with family or friends.

She was a huge sports fan. Following the Broadus “Hawks” for many years; even before the grandchildren played. She also enjoyed watching professional sports, everything from baseball to basketball. She had a competitive spirit when it came to supporting her favorite teams in the Super Bowl, World Series and NBA finals. For many years she and J.O. made the annual journey to Las Vegas for NFR, this was the high light of the year traveling with other Broadus couples to enjoy a fun time. While Jackie loved sports on the home front, she spent many hours in the yard taking care of her flowers; often working late in the yard after putting in a nine-hour day at the Big Sky. She always referred to her gardening as “therapy”. Her flowers were a major source of pleasure for her, and the hard work showed as her yard was often one of the prettiest in town.

Preceded in death by her parents Jack and Doris, brothers; Fallace and Larry, husband J.O. and sons; Mitch and Richard. She is survived by her children, Loren, LaDonna and Clint. Multiple grandchildren and great grandchildren whom all love their “GG”; along with many nieces and nephews.

Her friendly personality and quick wit touched many in the twenty-six years she and J.O. had the Big Sky Bar. She was a light in the community and will be missed by many.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, June 19, 2019 from 1:00-6:00 p.m. at Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home in Broadus. Graveside services will be held on Thursday, June 20, 2019 at 1:00 p.m. at the Valley View Cemetery in Broadus.  Condolences may be sent to the family by visiting:  www.stevensonandsons.com.

No words can express how much I will miss Jackie. She was a wonderful boss. Having someone that truly appreciates your work is hard to find. I’m so lucky she was also my friend. We had some pretty amazing laughs together. I hate to say that she loved a good piece of gossip, but I will never forget teasing her about those binoculars. What a woman she was. My heart goes out to family, she was a gem.

WE are so very sorry for the family and community that lost such a wonderful lady. When we got to MT (from MN), we would always go to the Big Sky Bar. Both Jackie and J.O. would make you feel so welcome. I remember about the 2nd year our sons got to go and Jackie called us to give one of them a very bad time about his age. She would even arrange a special gal time with some of the other ladies, with me. RIP Dear Lady!

I only met this awesome Lady once, but what a kind hearted, caring and funny Lady. I had the chance to visit with her and joke with her. She loved smoked cheese, and pickled asparagus. I will cherish the Choke Cherry syrup she traded me for my pickled Asparagus. laDonna, Jacklyn, Jo and family my heart goes out to you during this time of loss. There are no words that anyone can share to ease the heartache of the loss of a loved one, especially such a wonderful person as your mom and grandma. May God comfort you now and always. The memories of her that you hold in your hearts, will always keep her close by in spirit. God Bless.

I knew Loren and Ladonna’s mother fairly well from my high school days in Ekalaka. She was always pleasant to me and treated me like a grown up. I appreciated that. She was working in the Old Stand (the old old stand) and she fixed a great 7up and gin which I liked immediately, (too well). She was a nice lady. My sympathy to the family. I am glad I checked Facebook tonight. Sorry Loren, hope you are doing well. Erwin.

To cousin Jackie’s family, May God hold you in the palm of His hand, and wrap you in the love you shared with your beloved mother. My prayers are with you. Your dear mother was a unique angel on earth. She helped me with her warmth and love when my dad passed. I always enjoyed Jackie’s and my dad, Mel Kalstrom’s relationship. They were very close. Both would tease each other, and giggle. No matter the miles apart, when they were together, they would pick up right where they left off. As Cousins, they were special….family . Sending you all love and hugs.

My deepest sympathy to all of Jackie’s family. She had endured so much loss in her life, but chose to be a positive and happy person. I admire her courage, and I will certainly miss our long visits (usually about gardening and flowers, and of course grandkids). I know she served as a mom figure to many who needed a mom. She did everything with no thought of getting anything in return. Truly a generous lady in spirit and soul. RIP my friend.
