Jacob “Jake” Volz passed away peacefully September 28, 2022 at Holy Rosary Healthcare with family by his side.
Jake was born January 10, 1940 the 5th of 8 children to Rudolph and Clara Volz in Dodge, North Dakota. In 1951 the family moved to Miles City, Mt where he attended Sacred Heart School. While in high school he worked setting pins at the bowling alley where he found he enjoyed bowling and won many trophies over the years.
Jake joined the Army in February 1962, while serving in Germany he met and married a local gal, Frieda Freyh on 12-21-1964 in Huffenhardt. He was an MP with the rank of Sargent E5 when he was discharged in September 1967. The family moved back to Miles City, MT where he worked various jobs before going to work for the Milwaukee Railroad in 1972. After its closure in 1982 he went to work for Railcar Maintenance where he started out as a railroad car repair man and retired as the billing coordinator on December 31, 2004. In his 25 years at the company, it was run under 5 different company names.
Jake was a very detail orientated man, remembering who owned which land sections between here an Jordan, as many of the fields he had worked. Numbers were his thing and he was great at remembering them, whether railcar serial numbers, important dates, phone numbers, measurements or the mileage on the car (much to his youngest daughters dismay). He enjoyed dancing and was an avid gardener. His family, friends and neighbors were lucky to benefit from his love of gardening.
He is survived by his children Frank Volz of Billings, MT, Carolyne (Mimi) Berg of Boise, ID and Nancy Volz of Miles City, MT; his grandsons: Clayton Volz of Billings, MT and Austin Volz of Miles City, MT; granddaughters: Danielle (Shawn) Blanchard of ID and Brittney (Nick) Taylor of ID; Great Grandsons Collin Volz, Parker Greetis and Nixin Taylor; his sisters: Helen Murray and Eva McCabe; a brother Matt (Darlene) Volz, a sister-in law Betty Volz, as well as Margot, Anna and Erica of Germany and many nieces and nephews in both the US and Germany.
He was proceeded in death by his wife Frieda, his parents, brothers Nick and Joe, and a daughter-in-law Cindy.

Nancy, Austin and family.
I was so saddened by the news. Jake was a true dear friend. I have known Jake and all you from the time we moved in next door to you. I couldn’t tell you the date but I know Jake could tell us the year, date and I’m betting the time of day we moved next door. 😀. Jake was better than a alarm system he watched our block like an eagle. Jake and Freda were like second parents. Jake would stop by my shop and visit always updating me on what Nancy was doing and how Austin was growing up to be a fine young man and hockey player. It was not to long ago we were reminiscing about drinking Oly beer as we talked over the fence. I know Jake brought the beer so I wouldn’t drink all his beer. 😂I going to miss his garden benefits too. He will be missed!!! RIP Jake.
