Jacqueline E. Rakes, age 85, of Miles City formerly of Fallon passed away on Thursday, August 22, 2013 at the Cottonwood Care Home in Miles City.
Jacqueline was born on November, 3, 1927 in Marmarth, ND, the daughter of Arthur and Esther (Ruppert) Ashley. She grew up in Marmarth, and graduated as the Valedictorian of her class from Marmarth High School. After high school, she went to work for the Milwaukee Railroad as a telegrapher living in Mildred, MT. She met Bernard W. Rakes at a local dance and so began his courtship, where he would fly his plane to Mildred for frequent visits. They were married on January 11, 1947 and moved to their farm north of Baker. They started their family: Rene Marie, Janice Kay, Clinton Eugene & Bernard Wesley Jr. In 1953 the family moved into Baker, MT where Thomas Bruce & Barry Michael were born. In 1960, the family moved to an irrigated farm along the Yellowstone River in Fallon, MT, where Brian Scott was born. Jacqueline was a true homemaker, a great farmhand and a wonderful mother. She made all of her own bread and cooking for the family, as well as for any friends that might stop by. Jackie & Bernie loved dancing, playing cards and visiting with friends. They loved family get-togethers with in-laws, aunts, uncles as well as cousins. Jackie was a long time member of the Fallon Homemaker Club and the Sacred Heart Altar Society. She was involved with helping at the Fallon Harvest Fest, Fair Booth, Church Harvest Dinner, as well as many other charitable projects. In 1982 they started spending their winters in Apatchee Junction, AZ until 2000. In 2002, they retired from the farm and bought a house in Miles City, MT. IN 2009 they moved to Cottonwood Care Home in Miles City where she received compassionate and wonderful care until the time of her passing.
Jackie was preceded in death by her parents, a sister Dorothy Gilmore, her brother Frank Ashley and a daughter-in-law Sheila Rakes. She is survived by her husband Bernie; her children: Rene (Newell) Clarke, Jan Taylor, Clint Rakes, Bernie (Kim) Rakes Jr., Tom (Ruth) Rakes, Barry (Del Linda Frost) Rakes, Brian (Yvonne) Rakes; her grandchildren: LaNee (John) Sokoloski, Lana (Mark) Sokoloski, Mitch (Susan) Gallo, Tracy (Jim) Cornelia, Jenna Rakes, Greg (Julia) Rakes, Joshua Prater and Jenessa (Cody) Clark. I remember Bernie and Jackie being one of those pillars you had growing up in good ole Fallon, Montana! They both love to laugh and such a joy to be around. We always enjoyed them stopping in for a visit with Mom and Dad.
It has shown for many years the loyalty, compassion and love between them as a couple . The world has lost a wonderful woman, friend, mother, wife, grandmother and greatmother. She was one in a million! We can now let her rest in peace and treasure the legacy she laid down for her family.

I read with sadness of the loss of Jackie. My heart goes out to you over your loss. May God grant you comfort and peace during this difficult time. Galatians 1:3. Never forget that you can lean on your Heavenly Father for support. He is a comforter of all those who mourn. In His Word the Bible, He tells us to throw all our anxiety upon Him, because He cares for us, 1Peter 5:7. Isaiah 41:10. He also tells us of a brighter future when our loved ones will awake from their restful sleep to enjoy life in paradise. John 11:11; John 6:40; Revelation 21:3, 4. Many are finding solace in this promise. I pray that you will also. Heartfelt prayers are with you.

I remember the last time I saw Jackie & Bernie in the Harvest Festival Parade. Bernie was pushing Jackie in a wheelbarrow down the street. I think the theme of the parade was “No Guts No Glory”. By about the time he got to Lazy JD in the parade route, he was pooped. He said he didn’t remember being so weak or something about maybe Jackie being heavier. We all had a good chuckle over it.

Dearest Rakes family, I am so thankful to have had the pleasure of spending time with Jackie while she was at Cottonwood Care Center. Even while so severely afflicted with Parkinsons her humor showed through and she could still make me laugh. Although her passing saddens me I am glad her suffering has ended. My thoughts are with each of you

My thoughts and prayers go out to all of you, especially Jan, over the loss of a truly wonderful and gracious lady who always made me feel comfortable and at home when I was fortunate enough to visit her and your father at their home. I have very wonderful memories of this wonderful time in my life and my memories of your wife, mother and grandmother will be with me forever. I am sorry that I am out of state and won’t be able to be with you this afternoon but my thoughts are now and have always been with your family especially during you farewell to Jackie – my love, prayers and thoughts are with you.

I am very sorry for your loss. I so very much enjoyed visiting Jackie and Bernie out at Cottonwood Care Home. Jackie often would have comforting, soft music playing in her room. I liked one of the CD’s so much that I found it on line and got myself a copy which I often listen to. I will always think of Jackie when I play it.

Heather Carter says
Memories in the Heart- Unknown
Feel no guilt in laughter, she knows how much you care
Feel no sorrow in a smile that she’s not here to share
You cannot grieve forever, she would not want you to
She’d hope that you can carry on, the way you always do
So talk about the good times and the ways you showed you cared
The days you spent together, all the happiness you shared
Let memories surround you.
A word someone may say
Will suddenly recapture a time, an hour, a day
That brings her back as clearly as though she were still here
And fills you with the feelings that she is always near
For if you keep these moments, you will never be apart
And she will live forever locked safe within your heart

My sincere condolences to the family and friends of Jacqueline Rakes – I am sorry to hear of your loss. May you find comfort in many wonderful memories and beautiful pictures of Mrs. Rakes at this difficult time. God has promised that a time will come when no one will say “I am sick” (Isaiah 33:24). The Bible gives us hope that soon God will end all suffering, pain, and death. (Revelation 21:4) The promise of Paradise, the perfect conditions God originally intended for mankind in the Garden of Eden will be fulfilled including God’s “will being done as in Heaven also upon Earth“ (Matt 6:9, 10). It is hoped that you are comforted by the promises in the Bible. (John 17:3).
