On the evening of December 19th, 2024, Jake Herman Brost passed away peacefully after battling against cancer. He was surrounded by love and comfort from his family and friends in his sister’s home in Spearfish, SD. Jake was 54 years old.
Jake was born in Belle Fourche, SD during calving season on April 23rd, 1970 to Herman Boyd Brost and Kay Marie Brost. According to his father, he looked like a 9-pound prize fighter who had gone several rounds.
His early life consisted of being spoiled and dressed up like a doll by his 3 older sisters, along with being picked on by his older brother to add “character.” Jake quickly took a liking to animals on the family ranch, as he loved cats and horses. In fact, he could frequently be found climbing all over the horses or curled up in the corner of a stall, fast asleep. At the age of 2, he would hold his sister Johana’s cat upside down while sucking his thumb (the cat was unfazed).
Jake attended Broadus Elementary through the 4th grade, Ridge Country School grades 5th-8th, and graduated from Powder River County High School in 1988. He continued his education by earning a certificate for diesel mechanics at Sheridan Community College before returning home to the ranch. Jake connected with nature and liked the peace and quiet that came with it. You could often find him out in the wilderness talking to God and learning the ways of the land while ranching.
On March 18th, 2000, he married Denise Marie Norton at Church at the Barn in Gillette, WY, and later his son Joziah William Brost and daughter Elianna Mercy Brost were born. His children were the joy of his life as he introduced them to the privileges and hard work of ranch life. With this, he taught them the importance of faith and the love of God. There were many early mornings that he would play his guitars and worship through songs that he wrote—eventually inspiring his daughter to start singing as well.
Jake was a craftsman who liked building his own guitars, making wooden furniture, and taking pictures with his camera. He helped Joziah build his dream pickup in high school, which encouraged him to pursue diesel mechanics like his dad. Overall, he was a quiet man of God who always saw and appreciated the beauty in little things no one else could see.
Jake was preceded in death by his father Herman Brost, his brother-in-law Ross Wills, his brother Jess Brost, along with grandparents, several uncles, aunts, and cousins. He is survived by his children Joziah Brost and Elianna Brost, his mother Kay Brost, his sisters Johana Wills, Suze Bayne, Sally Sawyer, and many other cherished relatives and friends. Jake loved his friends and family deeply and wanted everyone in his life to know the grace of Jesus and spend eternity with him in heaven.
In lieu of flowers, fruit trees or nursery gift cards are happily accepted as Jake loved planting apple and cherry trees. His services will be held at Church at the Barn in Gillette, WY on January 11th at 10:30 a.m. Lunch will follow the service at Mt. Pisgah Cemetery.
