James Robert Bundy passed away on the evening of January 23, 2026. His passing followed a sudden medical event that resulted in a car accident.
Jim was born on February 21, 1945, to Charles and Betty (Powellek) Bundy. He was the fourth of seven children.
Growing up in a busy household as the fourth of seven children, Jim developed a strong sense of independence and loyalty to family. His early years were marked by shared responsibilities, lifelong lessons learned at home, and the close connections that come from growing up alongside many siblings. Those experiences helped shape his steady character, appreciation for hard work, and deep commitment to the people he loved.
Jim graduated from Custer County District High School in 1963. He went on to attend Montana State University in Bozeman. After college, he enlisted in the United States Navy, serving aboard the USS Okinawa from 1969 to 1971.
Following his honorable discharge, Jim returned to Miles City. Soon after, he was hired as a day-one driver for United Parcel Service, where he worked for 30+ years before retiring. His dedication and strong work ethic defined much of his life and led to many lasting friendships.
In 1978, Jim met Carol, his future wife. They were married in 1979 and began their life together with three children, Shelly, Donald, and Jason. In March of 1982, they welcomed their first child together, Mitchell. A little over a year later, they completed their family with the birth of Megan.
Jim was a devoted husband and father, spending countless weekends supporting his children in their activities. Some of the family’s favorite memories include Sunday morning WWF wrestling, impromptu wrestling matches in the living room, fishing on the Yellowstone River, and time spent on Commodore 64.
As the family grew, Jim found his greatest joy in being Grandpa. He cherished time with his 10 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren, whether it was trips to the dump or quietly rocking them in his chair.
Jim enjoyed woodworking and bowling, hobbies that reflected both his patience and his love of working with his hands. Through his work, hobbies, and genuine desire to help others, he built many lifelong friendships.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Betty Bundy; his sister, Bonnie; his brother, Roger; his brother-in-law, Phil Stewart; and his son-in-law, Jade Melby.
He is survived by his wife, Carol; his children, Shelly Melby, Donald (Hui) White, Jason White (Candice Lemieux), Mitchell (Crystal) Bundy, and Megan (Lindsay) Woolley; his 10 grandchildren; and his 6 great-grandchildren.
He is also survived by his siblings, Shirley Stewart, Don (Nina) Bundy, George (Patsy) Bundy, and Duane (Jane) Bundy, along with many nieces and nephews.
