James Crazymule, age 79, of Lame Deer died on Sunday June 7, 2015 in Hardin. James was born September 9, 1935 to James Crazymule and Elizabeth Rowland of Ashland, MT where he was raised and attended school. He later joined the United States Army and Stationed in Korea where he spoke his native Cheyenne language as a code to communicate. He was later honorably discharged.
James met his wife Martha Walksnice in the early 1960’s and they started a family. From this union, they were blessed with four children: Miller Sr., Marlene, Willard and Theresa Crazymule. His wife left him in 1979 due to illness, and he later married Theresa Old Bull in 1980. He and Theresa have spent 35 years together. He helped raise Edna Killsnight and her daughter Hazel, as well as Hazel’s children.
In about 1990 James started his own sanitation business, called “CM Sanitation.” He saw the need to help his people. He was a well-respected businessman and did not hesitate to help anyone that was in need. Anyone who came to his house to visit was fed and treated with good hospitality.
During the time of owning his business, he ran for Northern Cheyenne Tribal Council and was elected. He went on to represent the Northern Cheyenne Tribe in Washington D.C. He later on retired and became ill. During his illness he remained independent and continued to help people to the best of his abilities.
James was a fan of boxing and would watch it with his friend “Rock.” He was proud to have met Mike Tyson, who referred to James as a “Chief.” James will never be forgotten and will always be loved.
