James T. Fulkerson, 88, of Scottsbluff, formerly of Gillette, WY, died Tuesday, July 14, 2004 at his home at the Village at Regional West in Scottsbluff. A Memorial Service will be held at 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, July 20, 2004, at the Stevenson-Wilson Funeral Home in Gillette. Following his wishes, his remains were cremated.
James was born August 14, 1915, at Tazewell, Tennessee, to Tipton Evans and Viola M. (Essary) Fulkerson. At a young age, he moved with his family to a homestead north of Gillette. He grew up and received his education there, and graduated from the Campbell County High School with the class of 1933. In 1939, he began Fulkerson Aviation at the Gillette-Campbell County Airport, and on February 13, 1942, he married Rachel Marquiss at the Little Buffalo Ranch south of Gillette. During World War Two, he was a primary and intermediate contract flight instructor for the Army Air Corps at Spearfish, South Dakota. Following the war, he returned to Gillette and operated his flying service until 1978. He also farmed land surrounding the airport. He fully retired in 1980, and that same year, he married Opal Mankin Baker in Mesa, Arizona. He and his wife resided in Mesa until moving to Scottsbluff in February of this year.
He is survived by by his wife, Opal of Scottsbluff, Nebraska,his daughter, Ann Rosenberry of Scottsbluff, his son and daughter in law, Richard and Mary Fulkerson of Centennial, Colorado, and his grandchildren, Nick and Emily Rosenberry, John and his wife Kim Fulkerson, Katherine Fulkerson, Elizabeth Fulkerson, Patrick Fulkerson, Michael Fulkerson and Christine Fulkerson. A sister, Mary Keck of Gillette, WY also survives him. One brother, Bill Fulkerson preceded him in death.
