James Richard “Dick” Gibson, age 93, of Jordan passed away on Sunday, September 16, 2012 at the Garfield County Nursing Home in Jordan.
Dick was born on November 21, 1918 in Benzien, Montana, the son of Fred and Myrna (Garfield) Gibson. He grew up and attended school in Benzien and was a member of the first graduation class of the new Garfield County High School in 1937. Following his schooling he ranched until 1941 when he was drafted into the United States Army, serving from June 12, 1941 until December 5, 1945 when he was honorably discharged. Following his discharge, he returned to the family ranch where he ranched and did dirt work. Dick married Hazel Winter on December 20, 1947 in Billings, Montana. They made their life in the Jordan and Winnett areas, moving to the Winter Ranch on the lower Musselshell River in 1958 where they lived until age and health made them move to Jordan in the winter time.
Dick is survived by his significant other, Victorine Sensaba; four sons: John (Linda) of Jordan, MT; Jim (Rene) of Jordan, MT; Joe (Sandy) of Sand Springs, MT; and David of Billings, MT; six grandchildren: Joanna, Judd, Brandi, Berry, Jamie & Ty; four great grandchildren: Jenna, Julia, Jodi & Jaci; a sister-in-law: Phoney Rich of Lewistown, MT; a brother-in-law Jack (Kay) Hill of Macomb, IL; numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife Hazel of forty six years; his parents Fred and Myrna, a brother Bob, two sons: Danny and Henry; three brothers-in-law and two sisters-in-law.
Dick enjoyed working on anything with iron and grease. He spent more time welding and repairing the neighbor’s machinery than he did doing his own work. Dick also enjoyed going to auctions and working in his garden.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, September 22, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. at the VFW Hall in Jordan with military honors. Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home of Jordan is in charge of the arrangements. Condolences may be sent to the family by visiting: www.stevensonandsons.com.

My mother, Amy Crane, was Dick’s high school classmate. She always spoke of his intelligence with admiration. I treasure memories of the few times when Hazel and Dick, Alex and Amy Crane and Pearl and Jack Whitmer sat around the table telling old stories. Their laughter was contagious! Dick’s passing has filled the last empty chair at that table on the other side. May you be comforted by the many rich memories, and by knowing that he leaves a rich legacy. Our world needs more role models like Dick – simply, non-assuming achievers.
