Jim passed away peacefully at home on April 24th, 2022. Jim was 94 years old.
Jim Logan was born in Ottumwa, IA on October 3, 1927. He was the second child of five children born to George and Josephine Logan. Jim quit high school at the age of 17 to join the U.S Army on Dec 5th, 1945. Jim was a Tank Sgt with the 2nd Infantry (Indian Head) Division. He served until August 26, 1947. He then joined the family who had moved to Colstrip, MT where he went back to high school and received his high school diploma. Upon graduating, he managed the hardware store in Forsyth. He met and married his first wife in Forsyth, and they had 3 children: Diana, Mike, and John. The family moved to Glendive and that is where Jim started his career as a game warden.
Jim later transferred to Miles City. As a hobby he coached a softball league, and this is where he met Betty Jean “Jeannie”. They married in 1966. Jim and Jeannie had 4 children: Dennis, Troy, Darla, and Jami. He continued his career as a game warden for 31 years before he retired. Jim was well-known and respected by many across the state during his time as a warden. He was a shooting instructor at the Pistol Range and won lots of shooting competitions in his lifetime. During this time, he was a leader in the Eagle Scouts, served in the National Guard and filled as deputy jailer. He and John Michels taught many high schoolers how to dance. Jim also loved to call local square dances as well.
After retiring, Jim remained busy. He was Secretary and volunteered at the Eagles Club for many years. He did block management for the state and hauled and transported fish for the hatchery. He cut meat for Reynolds, processed taxes at H&R Block and worked security at the local baseball tournaments every summer. He enjoyed hunting, was an avid collector of guns and loved to sit and reload bullets.
Jim was proceeded in death by: George, father; Josephine, mother; Kathy, sister; George, brother; Jerry, brother; Mike, son; and Tucker, grandson.
Jim is survived by: Mary Jo, sister; Jeannie, wife of 55 years; Dennis, son (Peggy) Alicia (Chris), Tessa (Paris), Clay; Troy, son (Stacy) Nikki (Scott), Tory (Tim); Darla, daughter (Doug) Kyle (Amanda), Jaramie (Shelbey); Jami, daughter (Rob) Logan (Kailyn), Kassadee (Abel); Diana, daughter (Fredrick) Sean and Robin; Mike’s sons Ben, Tim; John, son (Teri) Theo, Charity, and Tyfani; and 25 great grandkids plus another great-granddaughter due in August.

Worked with him, rode with him, and shot with him. He was great to be around. He knew every hill top and every hiding spot in the country. If only all Game Wardens were like him. Jim was one of the great wardens and an awesome man. FG 77 is officially 10-10. He will be missed.

Tom Bivins says
I worked with Jim as a fellow Montana Game Warden for many years in South Eastern Montana. Jim was a dear friend and a reliable partner. His was always pleasant and well liked by almost everyone he encountered. To this day I have never known any man who had as many practical life skills as Jim. Hunting, carpentry, wiring, plumbing, square dancing, mechanical ability, shooting and marksmanship and on and on but above all he was a really kind person. It seems as we get older life is mostly about memories and I sure cherish the times I spent with Jim Logan.

In my work as a game warden stationed in Miles City it amazes me how many ranchers knew Jim. It seemed that every ranch from Jordan to Alzada and Sidney to Decker knew of Jim and had a story. He covered an incredible amount of country and was respected and admired. Blessings to the Logan family.

Beth Riggs says
I worked with Jim, while he was a game warden and I was the new awkward kid in parks. He was so welcoming and helpful. I remember him saying that our job was to make friends for the department and I think he was the best at making friends. My husband Vic worked in fisheries and we agreed that Jim always seemed happy to see people, so everyone responded by being happy to be around him. I still have Jim’s baked beans recipe that he shared with the department potlucks. God bless Jim, his family and the friends he left behind.
Mary Ottoy says
My condolences to the Logan family. May God wrap His arms around you all in your time of grieving.
Michael Mangen says
