In Memory Of

James “Jim” Sweeney, age 67 of Billings, formerly of Miles City

October 16, 1955 – July 27, 2023

James Sweeney, 67, of Billings, Montana, passed away in his home on July 27, 2023. James was born in Miles City on October 16, 1955. The son of Ambrose “Red” and Deloris “Dee” Sweeney, James was the first of four children. James went to Custer County District High School and later studied at Montana State University. He graduated from Wahpeton College of North Dakota with a diesel mechanic degree. He married Kathy Duneman on December 3, 1989 in Billings, Montana. Kathy proceeded him in death on January 16th, 2003.

James loved history, reading, visiting with friends, a good beer, his family and especially his great grandbabies. After retirement, solitaire and Facebook were his favorite ways to pass the time if he wasn’t down at the Powderhorn having a beer with his closest friends.

James Sweeney is preceded in death by both his parents and his sister Mary Sweeney and survived by his son William Sweeney (Tamara) of Billings, MT and daughter Katelyn Sweeney of Bozeman, MT, and stepdaughter Connie McQuire (Sam) of Ballantine, MT; Sister Helen Sweeney and Brother Michael Sweeney both of Bozeman, MT. Granddaughter Sydney Williams (Chance) of Ballantine, MT and great grandsons Braxton and Cash.

Big Sween, Steve Woodard and I use to hit the Powderhorn after work for some beers, (only when the wife would let me 😆) . Both Jim and Steve would give me crap about that. I was a machinist at Spencer Fluid Power when I met Jim, and I would bullshit with him while he was running his hone machine, good times! Rest in peace Big Sween, see ya on the good side!

Sorry to hear of Jim’s passing. He always had a warm smile on his face when we passed each other in the hallways of high school and when we saw each other years later. He was a gentle soul, kind to everyone , never a loss of words. Gone way to soon , I guess God had other plans for him ,so his assignment was up on this earth. Take care Jim, I know you will be missed by our class of 74, & others that you touched along Your journey in life! Rest in Peace Jim.
