James Lee Sanburn was born May 11, 1930 in Gillette, Wyoming to James N. (Jock) and Iris (Mahoney) Sanburn. He was joined by his sister Patty in 1938. They lived on Three Bear Creek; they then purchased the ranch on Bay Horse when Jimmy was 10 years old. Jimmy attended school at Bay Horse. Jimmy married Betty C. Elkins on May 11, 1949. They lived at Belle Creek for a short time before moving to the ranch at Bay Horse. They were blessed with two sons, Kenneth Neal and Scott James.
Jimmy enjoyed riding horses and also raising them. He and Betty enjoyed roping, hunting, square dancing and spending time with family and friends. As a young man Jimmy enjoyed calf roping and team roping. Roping was an important part of Jimmy´s life, one that he shared with his entire family. Jimmy and Jock roped together for 42 years, while spending so much time in the arena they also taught Neal and Scott to love it too. For many years, most weekends you would find Jock, Iris, Jimmy, Betty and the boys at a roping or rodeo somewhere in the tri-state area. Jimmy was a Charter member of East Fork Roping Club and he and Betty help start the Little Levi Rodeo in Broadus. Jimmy and Betty lived, worked and played together on their ranch until Betty´s death in 1990. Jimmy remained on the ranch until he moved to the Powder River Manor.

Thinking of you at this time. Jimmy was a special man and will be missed greatly. I remember how excited he could get when we talked about ranching – especially the horses & calving season (& not a bit excited when talking about farming). He was blessed to have such a warm & supportive family.

The softest spoken man I ever knew…always enjoyed my time around him, whether by watering up the spray tank for weed spraying, talking about horses, or time spent over on BayHorse…In the nursing home he always worried when we went thru the door to the hair shop, and I just thought of it as going thru the gate taking caution….:)May God Bless your Family with Memories that are flooding thru the gates.

I have fond memories from the “old days” the Mahoney family spending holidays together, but I loved going to Jim and Betty’s the best because we could go ice skating and even managed to fall into the hole cut into the ice so the cows could drink. And there were always the beautiful horses to admire and dream of riding someday. But as an adult getting to know both Jim and Betty while she was in the hospital in Billings. I learned they were gentle people who loved each other very much. I have always felt honored being able to spend time getting to know each other and become friends. I was proud to have him for a friend. My deepest sympathies are with your families during this difficult time. I wish I were closer so I could help.
