Jane Anne Engdahl, our tireless and prized quilter found a place to rest with God on February 11, 2023. She passed due to an immunotherapy treatment for Melanoma. She was born July 24, 1940, in Beacon, New York, the fifth child of Ralph and Clella (Johnson) McWilliams, arriving in Garfield County at age 1, after riding in the window well of her mother’s car. She was raised on a ranch at Hillside, Montana. She attended grade school at Hillside and attended high school in Jordan. She participated as cheerleader and worked at the local nursing home while attending high school. She worked for Dr. Farrand for 2 years after graduation.
Jane married Bob Engdahl on October 29, 1960, and began her ranch wife/gardener career lasting over 62 years. Jane and Bob had 2 children, Duane and Cathy, where she was a devoted mother supporting 4H and ranch projects. She became an avid quilter, a gardener and many hobbies which include macrame, needlework, scroll sawing, restoring antique furniture, loved to play the slots, and being a talented seamstress. She sewed most of her children’s clothes and mended and hemmed clothes for friends and neighbors. Many homes adorn her handywork. She shared her angel food cakes at gatherings and treated her family to delicious lemon meringue pies. She cherished the time spent with her sisters whether it was quilting or traveling to interesting places.
She is survived by her husband Bob; son Duane (Linda); daughter Cathy (Bud); two sisters, Myrna Stone and Joyce (Curtis) Schwartz and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Dean and Curtis; and one sister Betty Bozarth Leslie.
She will be missed by all her family, fellow quilters, and friends.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made in Jane’s name to a charity of one’s choice.

Sad news indeed. Jane’s warmth and hospitality to us ‘bone diggers’ who made their way to the Engdahl ranch over the decades touched so many from different schools, museums, and institutions the world over. A pitcher of iced tea and homemade cookies always welcomed you to Jane’s kitchen table on our annual summer visits. Deepest sympathy to Bob, Duane, and Cathy from their UC Museum of Paleontology, Berkeley, family. We remember Jane and her enduring kindness and interest in our work, our families, and our lives. Rest in peace Jane.

Very sorry to read of Jane’s passing. You were all very loyal clients for many years and much appreciated. We covered a lot of territory during those years and Jane was very gracious and astute. Most importantly, you were all great friends and I am richer for knowing her and all of you. Best wishes.

I always thought of Jane as timeless and invincible, that she would always be there to visit with. She was a true asset to this community and always had a smile on her face. I tried and failed to emulate her in all her passions, from gardening to woodworking. Every time I did something, I would ask myself if this was how Jane would do it. I am saddened for all of you and pray that you will have peace knowing that she is healed and is fixing up her garden in heaven. Take comfort in all the wonderful memories you have of her.
Barb Harbaugh Morgan says
So sad for Bob, Duane, and Cathy and all of Jane’s sisters’ and family. Jane worked at the hospital with my Mother and Joyce. I didn’t realize until just recently when I found several photos. All my memories in elementary and high school involve Bob and Jane following the bus to basketball games and supporting Duane and Cathy through all their activities and all of the other kids in Garfield County. She was such a beautiful. talented, and caring woman. My prayers are with you all.
