Memorial Service: Tuesday, April 19th, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. in Broadus, Montana at the Powder River Congregational Church.
Our beloved wife, sister, mother, grandma, great-grandma, aunt and close friend, Janet Alice (Whitney) Barnhart, passed away peacefully at her home surrounded by family and friends on Tuesday, April 12, 2011 at the age of 68.
Jan was born to Earl and Mary (Strait) Whitney on February 4, 1943 in Miles City, Montana. They moved to Texas and lived there for about four years and then moved to a ranch outside of Ekalaka, Montana, where she grew up and graduated from Carter County High School in 1961. She met her soul mate and lifelong partner, Harold Barnhart. They were married in Miles City, Montana on April 1, 1962 and lived in Broadus, Montana until 1966, when they moved to the Whitney family ranch near Ekalaka. They moved to Billings, Montana in 1972 so that she could attend school and become a draftsman. Where they reside still…
Jan was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis in 1990, and was always a contributor to the National MS Society events. She often served lunches at local MS Bike Tours and MS Walks, when not participating in walk. Jan enjoyed camping, crafts, family, supporting the MS Society, and collecting bells over the years. She was also an avid reader and enjoyed puzzle books. Jan was very supportive of our Troops and lit a star light in her living room window every night while her grandsons were overseas. Jan wished, and it was granted, to donate whatever was usable of her body, for MS Research. The Brain and Spinal Fluid Resource Center in L.A. is doing just that.
Jan is survived by her husband, Harold; two daughters, Cora Barnhart of Red Lodge and Caryn Barnhart (Clinton) Watters of Broadus, MT; two sisters: Hazel (Jed) Hendricks of Ekalaka, MT and Marilyn (Kenny) Schultz of Ekalaka, MT; two brothers: Joe (Cheryl) Whitney of Fallon, MT and Dwayne (Sheryl) Whitney of Miles City, MT; numerous nieces, nephews, one aunt, one uncle, ten grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren.
Jan was preceded in death by her parents, Earl and Mary Whitney and numerous aunts and uncles.
