Janet was born in Lake Mills, Iowa on November 21, 1942, the daughter of Ellsworth and DeLores (Geving) Nelson. She attended schools in Estherville, Iowa where she graduated from high school in 1961. Following graduation, she attended college at Augustana College in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, graduating in 1966. Janet married Lyle Swenson on August 14, 1966. They lived in Roberts, Montana for four years and in 1969, they moved to Terry. Janet taught 5th grade and Special Education at the Terry School for 26 years. Janet was a dedicated teacher and volunteered much of her time assisting students with special needs and also helped enhance cultural activities in the Terry community by doing plays and theater productions. Janet was a member of the Terry Teachers Association, the Prairie County Library Board, and was very involved in many other local community events. Janet was named 1993 First Lady of Prairie County. During the summer months, she helped at the Terry swimming pool by managing and teaching swimming lessons. Janet was a patient, tenderhearted, supportive person with a high standard of morals and strong family values. Her phenomenal sense of humor and her ability to make people laugh were her special talents.
Janet is survived by her husband, Lyle Swenson of Terry, MT; a son, Bill Swenson of Carson City, NV; two daughters: Melaney Swenson of Boise, ID; and Lisa Swenson of Las Vegas, NV; a brother, Daryl Nelson of Adel, IA; and a sister, Lezlie Nelson of Livingston, MT.
She was preceded in death by her parents. Funeral services will be held on Friday, July 30, 2004 at 11:00 a.m. at the Community Presbyterian Church in Terry.
