In Memory Of

Janette Krutzfeldt Jones, age 57, of Miles City.

June 16, 1968 – July 5, 2025

Janette Krutzfeldt Jones, age 57 of Miles City passed away on July 5, 2025, in Miles City, MT.

Janette was born in Miles City, Montana, on June 16, 1968. She was a “star” from the beginning when she was born on Father’s Day, and her parents got her weight in beef from the local Cowbells. Janette was the oldest child of Butch and Julie Krutzfeldt. From the early years Janette was “in charge” as there were five more children in the next seven years.

Janette continued with her outstanding achievements through her leadership roles in school activities, state officer roles in student council and her selection as the Montana Outstanding Student in two prestigious awards. Janette continued her education at Swarthmore College in Pennsylvania majoring in Economics and Public Policy and eventually returned to Montana to receive her Juris Doctorate with honors from the University of Montana School of Law. A gifted oral speaker, Janette was recognized as the national Moot Court Trial lawyer in law school and excelled in all areas of the legal profession. She worked for law firms in Billings and Bozeman before returning to join her father in the Krutzfeldt/Jones Law Office. Janette continued to serve Southeastern Montana for the past 29 years.

Janette did it all! She was the co-captain of her college basketball team, played on the fast-pitch softball team and was a lifelong go-getter for physical activity. She taught spinning classes for ten years at Miles Community College, completed the 45-miles biking segment of the Peaks to Prairie competition in Red Lodge and even decided to enter the Montana Triathlon a few years ago. The competition included running, biking and swimming, which was the event that was the most memorable because it felt like she was “swimming in jello” in Lake Elmo due to the undergrowth of algae. She joined friends two weeks ago for a bike experience in Deadwood and was set to go paddle boarding the day she passed away. One of her favorite things to do was to travel with her friends and family. This past winter her and Corey spent their 30th wedding anniversary on a trip to Spain and Portugal.

One of the most incredible contributions was Janette’s sense of service. She was an active member and president of Rotary, served on the Foster Care Board, delivered Meals on Wheels, had a 20 year involvement with the local 4-H program, serving as leader for the club and organized several events for the local beef shows plus several more service organizations where she gladly volunteered.

Her service to others was most obvious in her willingness to host many festivities and her ready willingness to be the first one to lend a hand to others. Janette made everyone feel welcome and cherished, especially in her home.

Janette’s family was the joy of her life. She was a devoted mother and poured her love into her children every single day with delicious meals and unwavering support.

Her daughter Julie Kate has been blessed to share the last two years with her mother when they began a journey of faith that still remains important today. She also excelled in healthcare and is studying to be a therapist.

Her oldest son Garrett is in his last year of law school at the University of Montana. Janette is his biggest fan and best role model. She was so excited to have him back in the office to teach and work with him in the future.

Janette was very proud of all of Justin’s accomplishments, especially golf and how he could handle his steer in the show ring. She was so looking forward to his next chapter in farming and ranching.

Janette met her “soul mate” Corey in eighth grade and they shared a true love story. Corey was everything to her and Janette was the love of his life. They were devoted to each other and lived life to the absolute fullest. She loved her extended family and the wonderful relationship she enjoyed with the Jones family, especially Bill and Pansy.

Janette was exceptionally organized in all that she does. Janette was a peacemaker, a mediator, and showed kindness and respect to all that she met. She had a tremendous group of friends and companions, including her animals, and Janette loved them all.

Janette is survived by her loving spouse, Corey, children Julie Kate, Garrett, and Justin; her parents Butch and Julie Krutzfeldt, siblings Steve (Julie), Jeanie (Andrew), Tyler (Pamela), and Carrie (Jon). She was also survived by her in-laws Bill and Pansy Jones and their children Ryan (Nikki), Reed (Shannon) and Marcie (Jim). She loved and valued her numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held on Friday, July 11, 2025, with the family receiving friends from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. followed by a Rosary and Vigil service at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Miles City. Mass of Christian burial will be held on Saturday, July 12, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Miles City. Rite of committal will follow in the Custer County Cemetery. Condolences may be sent to the family by visiting: www.stevensonandsons.com. Should friends desire, memorials in Janette’s honor may be made to: The Ronald McDonald House 26345 Network Place, Chicago, IL 60673-1263 or to the charity of your choice.

My favorite memory of Janette is when I was rehearsing a song for the Go Western Days event and she stood directly in front of the stage just listening. I never felt accepted but with one sweet comment she changed all of that for me. She told me that she had no idea that I could sing and that I had the most beautiful voice. She made me feel loved in that single moment. Love and prayers to the family.

We are still in shock over this news. Janette was a very professional and conscientious attorney. But more importantly, she was a kind and respectful person. I enjoyed her company at our Wednesday night golf. Her quirky comments were always amusing. We will definitely miss her. We wish her family peace and will keep all of you in our prayers as you cope with the loss of your wife, mother, daughter, and sister.

Corey, Julie, Garrett, & Justin —

I will never forget Janette’s kindness towards me when I was a young girl that carried into my adulthood. She was so genuine in her interactions with me from a young age– always asking what I was reading and writing and sharing her own book recommendations, too. I was so jealous of how quickly she could read! As an adult, her kind words of encouragement in my writing and public art efforts helped me feel seen and validated. What an incredible woman to always take the time to uplift other women around her. I am a better person for having known her and received her words of kindness and support. We are thinking of your family and sending all the love we can muster.

Janette was my freshman year college roommate and we remained friends throughout our time at school. She was such a charismatic and intelligent woman and she had a great sense of humor. She was always true to herself and I always admired her for that. She was also very proud to be from the great state of Montana and from Miles City and represented you very well! I’m deeply sorry that she is gone so soon. My family’s thoughts and prayers are with Janette’s family at this very difficult time.

Corey, Butch, Julie and the Jones and Krutzfeldt families – I am beyond heartbroken to hear of my dear friends passing. I so enjoyed Janette and visited with her last in early May. She was so kind and a great asset to our family legal needs. Julie – as you know, our small “spinning” group was special. I so looked forward to our times in the gym. One of my favorite memories of Janette was one day it was just the two of us at spinning. Of course, Janette always had her music. A song Jannette so loved was “Over the Rainbow” which we listened to and visited about. For years, every time I hear this song it reminds me of Jannette and the fond memories I have of her. My deepest sympathies.

I am truly at a loss for words. To Janettes family please accept my sincerest condolences. Janette did some work for our family and was one of the finest people I’ve ever met. She was so professional, so smart . You knew she was in charge and was going to doing her very best for you. I remember her calling me Bob (my first name is Bill) before court one day. I had glasses on and she didn’t recognize me right away. We got the biggest laugh about that. Her tips about the tomato soup at the cafe and everything she did to help our family I’ll never forget. God got a really great lady way to soon. My heartfelt prayers today, tomorrow and always be with Janette, her family and friends. God Bless!

It was about 2005 and we were all chasing kids in spring soccer in Miles City. Being the dutiful parents we were watching a mob of youngsters collectively kick each other in the shins, Corey and I would catch up on goings on and maybe slip in a fond memory or “reride” story from days long past. Janette was always tolerant of our reminiscing it seemed as long as our eyes were on the field. The best display was during a particularly painful shin kicking and Corey would attempt to look at me during one of his yarns and Janette would “guide” his attention by using his earlobe. I thought Corey was just sitting comfortably in front of Janette’s camp chair while she affectionately rubbed his earlobe with her thumb and forefinger, but I may have been mistaken. Rest in Peace Janette, Strength to you, Corey. LK

Cory, your kids and the entire Jones & Hirsch Families. I have been at a loss for words since hearing that it was time for Janette, to go home to be with Jesus. Nothing seemed adequate then today God’s Word showed me some wonderful scriptures. I was studying the gifts of the Spirit when I found 1 Corinthians 12:4-5. “That there are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit. There are differences of ministries , but the same Lord.” Then it took me to 1 Thes. 4:13-18 ‘Where they talk about those who have fallen asleep in Jesus’.. In other words their spirit has left the body, but it promises that Christ will come and take all home to heaven one day and just how that will happen and “Thus we will be with the Lord”. It was verse 18 that really had a message for me: “therefore, Comfort one another with these words”. I hope this helps through this tough time and the tremendous loss you are all experiencing right now. I’m sorry we couldn’t make it in person to attend her services, but you have been wrapped in our thoughts and prayers.

Dear Carrie, Julie, and the rest of Janette’s family.
I just saw this and was greatly saddened.
I met Janette on the board of the Miles City Foster Care Project and I’m thankful for the time that we were on the board together. Even after Janette left the board she was always willing to help us out if we needed it. There are not many people in the world today like her and she will be dearly missed.
