Charles “Jay” Neiman, of Broadus passed away August 26,2024 in Broadus at the age of 77. Jay was born February 24,1947 to Iris and Jim Neiman of the little Powder River area. His early elementary school years were spent in country school, later transferring to Broadus and graduating from Powder River County District High School in 1966. Jay enjoyed playing basketball, football and roping in his high school years. Jay went on to attend college in Havre, where he met Kathleen Frerich. Kathleen and Jay were married October 24,1968 at St Charles Catholic Church in Whitefish Montana. The couple moved to Broadus and welcomed daughter Lisa Marie in 1969 and son Patrick James “Pete” in 1970. Jay loved being a dad. He spent hours coaching baseball, playing “horse” in the driveway, golfing (even in the rain) and pulling us kids on waterskies.
While Jay and Kathleen owned and operated the Quarter Horse Hotel, he also worked for the Montana department of transportation and later for Alderman oil. This led him to a career in truck driving. He began driving for Texaco in 1988. Texaco gave the empty nesters a chance to travel the country. In the next 15 years the couple would reside in Watford City ND, Grand Junction CO, Gillette and Moorecroft WY, Sour Lake TX, and Yuma Az. Once in Yuma, Jay founded Neiman Trucking. Long haul driving suited his need to be moving constantly. In 2018 Jay retired from trucking and moved back to the only place he really felt at home, Broadus. The community welcomed him back with open arms and we the family are grateful for that. Highlights of his week included the rusty zipper coffee club, senior lunch on Wednesday, watching the “Rockies” and Sunday door holding at the Faith Bible Church.
Jay is survived by his daughter Lisa and her husband Glen Majors of Manhattan, MT; his son Pete Neiman of AZ. Sisters Katie (Bruce) Owen of Billings, MT and Susie (Lyle) Stempke of Bertrand,NE. Four grandsons: Matthew (Elizabeth) Majors and their son Henry of Bozeman, MT; Dalton Majors of Manhattan, MT; Joshua Majors of Belgrade, MT; and Dillion Register of Kingman, AZ. Numerous nieces and nephews including Scotty Owen of Cody, WY.
Jay was preceded in death by his wife Kathleen Neiman as well as his parents Iris and Jim Neiman and nephew Casey Owen.
A special thank you to pastor Tom Herzog and the entire Faith Bible Church congregation for all they did to help Jay in his final years.

Dictionary definition(s) of Mr. Jay: 1. Grumpy on the outside, teddy bear on the inside 2. Gruff ol’ fart with a huge heart. <3 🙂
He was the first to sling a little b.s. someone's way just to see if it would come back at him….and the more it did, the better he liked it. There weren't very many kids that left the IGA without Jay giving them a Hershey bar–never asked the parents, just 'here ya go.' I appreciated him looking in on my mom when she was housebound after a surgery; he'd always ask after her then just go see for himself. In short, Jay was a good man and will be missed in the community.

My deepest sympathy to Lisa, Pete, Katie, Susie and families. Jay was in my brother’s class, and Katie was my classmate and friend. I had many fun times at the Neiman ranch growing up. May Jay rest in peace …. our thoughts and prayers are with the family during this difficult time.

Jay and his family were a special part of our family! I don’t know who watched over who but dad (Ken Jesse) or Jay. He was a very special person. He always claimed to be “Grumpy “ but everyone knew better! Prayers are with the family as they mourn his passing.

Jay was a really nice guy.He always tryed to act like a grouch, but he would smile and ruin the effect. I haven’t seen him for a while so I hope he went peacefully.

My heart, thoughts, prayers and hugs go out to Lisa, Pete, Katie, Susie and the rest of the Neiman families. We grew up as neighbors on the river. I remember when Jay, Tommy Wallace, Doug, and Larry Edwards would sit together on the school bus and raise a ruckus ☺️ much to the chagrin to our poor suffering Busdriver! But, afterwards, those four became the nicest men you ever want to know. Jay was a very kind, personable person and will be sorely missed. Rest in peace, Jay

Susie, Katie, Lisa and pete,
Sympathies from our family to yours. Many memories of this grumpy old man, who loved to tell me stories of my Dad in days gone by about bus driver and roping. Visited a lot with him at church and also at Jesse’s for meals. RIP my friend. We were also neighbors when I was growing up on the Powder River.

Memories of how Jay liked to give a ‘bad time’. But always with a smile and a heart of hold.
Happy memories to his family.
