With her family by her side, Jean Carol Mertz, 65, of Canyon Creek, passed away Wednesday, July 7, 2010.
She was born in March of 1945 in Cincinnati, Ohio to Cliff and Helen Mack. Jean attended college at the University of Cincinnati where she received her undergraduate degree in Teaching. She then went on to earn her Masters degree from Ohio State in Social Services. On July 30, 1976 she married Martin Mertz and together they raised two children, Marty and Pam. After being diagnosed with breast cancer, Jean retired from Pelican Bay State Prison in May 2005 and moved to Canyon Creek, Montana. While she enjoyed traveling around the country, her most treasured place was at home with her family and pets.
The Mertz family would like to thank the staff at St. Peters Cancer Treatment Center, Dr. Weiner and the nurses at the Oncology unit of St. Peters Hospital. Your love, care and support for Jean will live on in our memories.
She was preceded in death by her father and mother, Cliff and Helen, and her brother, William Mack.
Jean is survived by her husband, children, and nephew William Mack of Tacoma, Washington.
A memorial service celebrating her life will be held 1:00 p.m. Sunday, August 1, 2010 at Anderson Stevenson Wilke Funeral Home in Helena.
