James Michael Fox
Was born on May 6, 1956 at Ashland, MT in the Camps Area. James, better known as Jimmy, was home birthed. In the traditional manner his two grandmothers assisted as Midwifes.
James “Jimmy” Fox was born to Joseph Fox Sr and Winona Tangled Yellowhair Fox. His Cheyenne name Walks Out Man, ho’e hetane’ hne’
Jimmy passed peacefully at home on December 6, 2025. He was 69 years old.
He went to school at St. Labre Indian School until the 11th grade. There he played football, basketball, and track. Jimmy furthered his education at United Tribes Technical College in Bismark, ND where he attended Culinary School. While there he taught the cooks how to make bread. After his return home he enrolled at Dull Knife College in the Vo-Tech program as a Carpenter.
Jimmy worked at Guild Arts Graphics. Then worked at St. Labre as a Custodian, Maintenance and a Cafeteria Dishwasher. He was a BIA wildland firefighter; he fought the Yellowstone fires of ‘88. He also fought fires in Colorado, Nevada, Wyoming, North Dakota, and on the “Rez.”
He also played independent basketball for the Otter Hill Gang and Dull-Knife College basketball team. He also played softball for the Tongue River Chiefs.
Jimmy was also a good horseback rider in his younger years. He liked pow-wow music and he and the local boys used to be the 1st dancers to get out and dance before the annual powwow began. They danced all in fun. He liked to sing pow-wow songs and used to sing with one of the local drum groups. He was one of the Tongue River Rats and also a Back Alley Cat.
He lived a happy and humble life, always there for a person in need of help. He also knew and respected the Northern Cheyenne cultural and spiritual ways. Jimmy also frequently attended church at St. Labre Mission.
Jimmy is preceded in death by his parents Joe Fox Sr and Winona Fox. Brothers: Arnold White Antelope, George Fox, Edward Fox, Mathew Fox and infant brother David Paul. Niece Selma White Antelope and granddaughters Ceta Big Medicine & Shelray Limpy.
He is survived by brothers Joseph Fox Jr (Lucinda) and Richard Fox both of Ashland, brother Marvin Fox of Butte. Sister-in-law Verlene Fox (late George Fox) of Ashland. Adopted sister Adeline Fox of Lame Deer. Nephews: David Fox (Tommeejoe), Sidney Fox, Silas Big Medicine. Nieces: Jennifer Fox, Velinda Fox (Jerry Spang), Desiree Fox, Luanna Fox, Luzenia Russell, Talina Russell. Grandchildren: Dustyn, Bailey, Andrea, Joseph and Jocinda Fox, Devin Whitewolf (Lane), Valor & Chitat Killsback, Wanbli Spang, Jerome & Gabrielle Fox (aka Gabby), Raymond & Sheldon ”Rock” Limpy, Camille, Zoey & Jerico Poitra. Great Grandchildren: Haythen, Satele, Bryson, Aracelly, Maleah, Swede, Zaisean, Emrey & Avery, Regina. As well as numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

We send our condolences to the Fox family. Jimmy we will miss you dearly our Indian brother sit here at the house and tell stories when all the Alley Cats where alive. He helped picking hay bales for use all we did is laugh and move on to other. We are going to miss Jim Bob just give my sister Delores a big hug for us. Love you and miss you Jim Bob. So sorry to hear about Jimmy. Condolences to the family. I can remember when I was Postmaster at Ashland Post Office when raising the flag, Jimmy would sing the Northern Cheyenne Flag song. He was always so respectful and friendly with a good heart. RIP Jimmy Fox
