Funeral services for Joan Ann Joanie Hughes, age 48, of Gillette, Wyoming will be at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 19, 2005 at the New Life Wesleyan Church in Gillette, Wyoming with Pastor Ginny Bettendorf officiating. Burial will follow at the Mt. Pisgah Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Friday, February 18, 2005, from 2:00 p.m.-7:00 p.m. at the chapel of the Stevenson-Wilson Funeral Home.
Joan Ann Joanie Hughes died on Tuesday, February 15, 2005 at the Campbell County Memorial Hospital of Gillette. Joanie died after a courageous struggle with complications of lupus, diabetes, and eventual heart failure.
Joanie Hughes was born on August 20, 1956 in Newcastle, Wyoming the daughter of John and Jimmie Nelson of Upton, Wyoming. As a child she attended the Upton schools and graduated high school in 1974. After graduation Joanie attended Chadron and Black Hills State University. After college she married and later divorced. Joanie married Dr. Michael Hughes on February 14, 1981, and they made their home in Gillette, Wyoming. She was a homemaker and bookkeeper for her husband's optometry practice. Her character was marked by a selfless support and unconditional love to everyone around her. Joanie always loved the outdoors and her hobbies included playing piano, horses, traveling with her family, taking mystery trips, and traveling extensively all over the world. Joanie enjoyed her children and spending time with her family and friends. She was especially known for putting her family before herself.
Joanie is survived by her husband, Dr. Michael Hughes of Gillette, Wyoming; three sons, Adam (Keri) Miller of Fort Collins, Colorado; Conrad (fianc Jaci) Miller of Seattle, Washington; Judson Miller of Naples, Florida; one daughter, Stephanie Hughes of Laramie, Wyoming; her mother, Jimmie Nelson of Upton, Wyoming; two brothers, Terry (Carol) Nelson of Casper, Wyoming; David Nelson of Cheyenne, Wyoming; numerous nieces and nephews and several aunts and uncles.She was preceded in death by her father, John Nelson and grandparents.
