Joan Mary (Schillinger) Goodale, 95, passed away peacefully in her home on March, 27, 2024.
Joan was born February 14, 1929 to Joseph and Cecelia (Lenz) Schillinger in Wolf Point. The youngest of the family, she was blessed to grow up with her brothers Leo and Allan on the family farm in Vida. Joan attended the Schillinger School until her high school years, when she then attended and graduated from Circle High School.
Mom attended Montana State College in Bozeman, where she studied to be a teacher for one year and a quarter (1946-47). Upon getting engaged to her husband of 54 years, she returned home to Circle, Montana.
Joan married Dale Goodale on January 30, 1949 at St Francis Xavier Church in Circle. To this union they were blessed with six children, Linda, Judith, Cecelia, John, David, and Robert.
As the family got older, Mom decided to work outside the home. While still looking out for her children, she spent many years working at the State Liquor Store (10 years), in 1979 she went to work for the County Attorney (Bob Hoover) (half days), and for the Clerk of Courts (initially half days). She retired in June 1989 as the deputy Clerk of Court. Over the years Mom was a member of the Kermit Njaa Auxiliary #4813, Board member of the McCone County Nursing Home, Board member on County Council on Aging, and Director of the McCone 100 Club. She loved her monthly bridge club meetings with her dear friends (63 years). Mom was a gracious lady who did many volunteer projects and was very involved in the St Francis Catholic Church activities until she moved to Mission Ridge in Billings, Montana in June 2015. She made many new friends at Mission Ridge and enjoyed visiting and playing pinochle with her fellow residents.
Mom’s legacy was her dedication to her Family. Mom was the number one fan of all her kids no matter what activity or sports they were involved in. Whenever possible she was there supporting them. She did tire of science projects! She took pride in her cooking and baking skills. Her homemade cinnamon rolls, apple pie and especially her Christmas homemade candy were always looked forward to by all of us lucky to get to get them. She cherished family events, from Christmas and Thanksgiving get togethers with her brother’s families where each family rotated hosting every year until their children grew older. There would still be occasional “Schillinger” family reunion at one of the family residences, the Circle Park or in Glendive. A get together with the family always meant good food and just a little bit of beer! She always cherished her role as a sister, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Every summer meant a visit from each of her children’s families and which meant more time to spend and teach her grandkids or great-grandkids. This continued to happen at her residence in Billings until her passing.
Mom was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Dale, her oldest daughter Linda Barlow, son-in-law Mark Tiensvold, her brother Leo, and sister-in-law’s Shirley (Allan) and Beverly (Leo) Schillinger, Lois (Gomer) Owens, and Mary (Ed) Heimburg; brother-in-law Daniel C. Goodale.
Survivors include her brother Allan Schillinger; daughters Judy and Cis; sons John (Elisabeth), David (Sherry), and Bob; son-in-law Joe Barlow; grandchildren John Barlow, Tyler (Megan), Kirk, Craig (Lindsey), Nicole, Jennifer (Andrew), Christopher (Makala), Daniel (Elaina), and her great-grandchildren; Julia Conneley, Markus and Myles Tiensvold, Josey and Natalee Tiensvold, Scarlett and Ivy Tiensvold, Annabelle, John and Beau Goodale.
