In Memory Of

John “Jack” Chapweske Jr, 74, of Miles City

Jack Chapweske, age 74 of Miles City, passed away on May 5, 2017 at Holy Rosary Extended Care. Jack was born December 27, 1942 in Fargo, ND to John and Kathryn (Falconer) Chapweske. The family moved to Miles City in the fall of 1955. Jack attended Sacred Heart Schools and graduated in 1960.

Following graduation, he enlisted in the US Air Force. After basic training at Lackland AFB (San Antonio) TX, Jack was stationed at Chanute AFB (Rantoul) IL and Beale AFB (Marysville) CA. Jack then returned to Miles City and attended Custer County Junior College (currently renamed Miles Community College) where he met Susan Underdahl. They immediately began dating and were married June 6, 1964. They had two children, Lisa was born in 1966 and Daniel in 1970/

Jack worked various jobs, among them Miles City Mercantile, Peavey Company, Miles City Ford, Milwaukee Road and Burlington Northern Railroad. In March 1981, Jack began his daily commute to Colstrip that would continue for over the next 26 years. He was employed by Bechtel Power Corp during the construction of units 3 and 4. Jack then worked for Montana Power Co. and PPL Montana, the company from Pennsylvania that purchased Montana Power Co.

Jack currently is a member of the Range Riders Museum and the Miles City Caledonians; he started attending the annual celebration of Robert Burns birthday with his granddaughter Megan and was something he always looked forward to. Jack attended over thirty celebrations and they became more special when two of his grandchildren, Josie and Jacie Chapweske became highland dancers. Jack was proud of all his grandchildren and great grandchildren and was their biggest fan. He always had a smile on his face.

Other organizations that Jack previously was active in include, Sacred Heart Roundtable, Elks Lodge, the Barn Players and Miles City Youth Baseball. Jack enjoyed shooting pool and coffee with friends. Two of his hobbies included reading and “B” Western movies and memorabilia. Jack supported and attended most all local sports and spent several years actively involved in them (coaching at Sacred Heart School). Jacks greatest love was for his extended family and to be there with them and for them in whatever activity they pursued.

Jack was preceded in death by his parents John and Kay. He is currently survived by his wife Sue; they celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary in June 2014. Jack is also survived by his two children Lisa (Darwin) Cain and Dan (Tonya) Chapweske of Miles City. Sister; Sharon (Larry) Wilson of Glendive, Brothers; Bob (Kathy) Chapweske of Miles City, Gerald (Tina) Chapweske of Fargo, ND. Grandchildren; Megan (Zeth Roberts) Cain of Billings, Matt (Devin Branum) Cain of Miles City and Josie, Jesse and Jacie Chapweske of Miles City, great-grandchildren; Hayden, Traven and Aspen of Billings and numerous nieces and nephews.

Should friends desire, in lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Range Riders Museum or to a charity of one’s choice.

Dear Sue, Dan, Lisa, and family~

Please accept my condolence at your deeply personal loss. The obituary is a fine testament to Jack’s active life and his love for family and community. He loved and kept watch over Miles City like few men I’ve known. If it’s true (and I think it is) that the most powerful among us aren’t those elected to office but the well-informed citizen willing to rise with an honest and engaged question, to speak his truth to power or to respectfully challenge those in authority to act in the public interest, then Jack was one of the most powerful among us.

Jack was a regular visitor to City Hall and the mayor’s office and we enjoyed several conversations over coffee or in the grocery store. He was inquisitive, engaging, and forceful in argument. Few among us can question a man’s motives but I’m certain his civic involvement wasn’t about ego or spite or personal gain. I think his mission was to make a way forward for all of you in the place he loved best. I’ll miss him dearly and I know you will, too. We’ll all miss Jack.
