John L. Schoenbeck, age 70, of Broadus, MT, passed away on October 11, 2023 at his home in Broadus after a battle with cancer.
John Ludwig Schoenbeck was born April 22, 1953 in Billings, Mt to Herman and Betty (Thompson) Schoenbeck.
John’s family moved around a lot because of his dad being a world roamer, John thought he might have went to about 20 different schools in his lifetime. John enlisted in the army in 1971. After returning home we went to work for Harold Draine, then Tony Gail, where he met and married his best friend, Tammy Popp in 1978. The couple moved to Belle Creek, then to North Dakota, then to Roundup where he worked for Gebhart Sawmill and Doug Parrott Ranch.
Welcoming their first daughter Amber Lynn in 1979, shortly thereafter they moved back to Broadus and in 1981 they welcomed their second daughter Aspen Lee. Then off to Colorado to chase the oil rigs and when it was time for Amber to start school it was back to Montana. John said that he wanted his kids to go to one school and not have to move around like he did. During this time, he went to work for Chuck Hubing Ranch for a few years. The family then moved back into Broadus where he was a mechanic at UPS, welcoming their first-born son Axel Levi in 1987. Last but not least, Austin Ludwig came along in 1991, completing their family.
John was an amazing mechanic and could rebuild a carburetor in no time flat. He did various jobs around Broadus including working for Dewey LaRoche, Lincoln Best, Jim and Scott Cain, Truman Worman, Zach and Clint Worman, Hugh Fulton, and Kurt Collins, all while making an awesome home for his family. He also had a little piece of paradise which he passed on to son Axel and focused on making his home in town just how he wanted it. John also enjoyed tinkering in the shop, making metal wall hangers and doing wood projects. Many of his friends have his treasures on their walls. He was always happy making wall hangings and wood projects for his kids and grandkids.
John’s seven grandkids were the light of his life; he was very proud of them. He also had a lot of kids he adopted as his grandkids too. One was Dolly, who held a special place in his heart.
John is survived by his loving wife of 45 years, Tammy; Amber (Dan) McDowell, Ciara and Macyn McDowell; Aspen (Larry) Beall, Tayt and Bryden Beall; Axel (Kellie) Schoenbeck, A.J. and Henry; Austin (Jenna) Schoenbeck and Braxton. Brothers Richard (Charlene) Schoenbeck; Fred (Jackie) Schoenbeck; sisters, Carol Schoenbeck; Patsy Madler; Brother-in-law Dennis Rost & numerous nieces & nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Herman and Betty Schoenbeck; his in-laws Johnny and Nell Popp; sister Margaret Rost; brother George Schoenbeck; brother-in-law Alvin Madler; and sister-in-law Becky Popp.
Interment will be held on Friday, October 20, 2023, at the family ranch near Sonnette. A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, October 21, 2023, at 1:00 p.m. at the VFW Hall in Broadus. A potluck luncheon will be served afterwards. Should friends desire memorials can be made to the local cancer fund in Broadus.

Aw, guys, this really breaks my heart. John was such a card, and SO talented with his metal arts! I loved his sense of humor, his laugh, his love of good ol’ country music, and doing a little jig with him once in awhile when one of those songs came bellowing out of the jukebox at the local watering hole. Every time I hear a little Merle or another of those greats, I’ll think of John. He fought a brave and valiant fight with good family lifting him up as much as humanly possible; seek comfort in being able to be there with him and for him. Much love and the deepest of sympathies, Tammy and family.

Tammy, I just don’t know where to start.. it was always so great hearing the “tunes” coming from your garage, wondering what kind of creative creation we would get to see next. Never forget the day he gave the cowboy to Darold and he couldn’t wait to get it on his side by side! Each one was so unique in “John ” through and through! Then there were all of your yard decorations! Such an artist! Never forget how close he was to Bud. When my birthday comes around it will renew all the memories. Same age only a day apart. He was a great one…
