I only just stumbled upon John’s memorial here. I had classes with John at KCKCC back in the late 90s when we both were pursuing a degree in addiction counseling. I would also often run into him at pow wows. John was such a kind and earnest man. I remember the one day in class, after he had given a speech, and asked if anyone had any questions, and someone asked him why native Americans don’t have facial hair. His simple response was “Because we shave.” And that was just so like him. In the intervening years I’ve often found myself wondering where he was, am I am truly sad to know that he has taken leave of this world much too soon.
