Joseph Richard Quinlan, 80, of Forsyth passed away Wednesday, October 22, 2008 at Rosebud Health Care Center.

Joe was born July 13, 1928 to Joseph R. and Emma Scheidt Quinlan. He attended the rural Smith Creek School during his early childhood and later attended school in Forsyth as well. As a young man he worked for the Ben Arnold and Collins ranches and then left eastern Montana to serve in the Army at Fort Lawson, Washington. After 2 years of military service he returned home to the Forsyth area. On Jan. 29, 1959 he married Joan Tillitzki in Forsyth. In the first couple years after marriage, he farmed, worked for Big Timber Livestock and the Gerhardt ranch, delivered mail to Colstrip and drove truck for Dave Manning. Joe and Joan eventually settled west of Forsyth on Armels Creek, raising hay and cattle. Joe enjoyed riding and raising horses and cattle, woodworking, fishing, playing cards and spending time with his family.

Joe is survived by his wife, Joan Quinlan of Forsyth; his son, Larry and his wife, Nan, of Forsyth; his two daughters, Lonnie Quinlan Murphy (Wade Murphy) of Deer Lodge, MT and Loretta Quinlan (Harry Sugrim) of New York City, NY; two grandchildren, Amy Elizabeth Quinlan of Forsyth and Joseph Robert Quinlan of Forsyth; two great-grand children, Elizabeth Jo Quinlan and Emmilee Ann Quinlan; one sister, Marie Reichert of Billings; and 4 brothers, Howard, Robert, Marvin and Donald Quinlan, all of Forsyth, MT.

He was preceded in death by both his parents and his brother Arden Quinlan and a sister, Josephine Quinlan Cory.
