Joseph Victor Salo, 69, passed away early Saturday morning, August 29, 2009, at the VA Nursing Home Care Unit after a courageous 29 year battle with Multiple Sclerosis.
Joe was born in Deer Lodge, Montana on May 5, 1940 to Eino and Priscilla Honey Salo. He graduated from Powell County High School in 1958. Joined the Air Force, and served 4 years in Greenland. On December 26, 1964 he married Mary Hansen. Together they had 8 children. Joe had started working for the Milwaukee Railroad when he was 15 years old, and when he returned from his military service he resumed his railroad career. He was a devoted husband and father who never missed a day of work in over 23 years. In 1979 he was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. He remained in the care of his family until 1981, when he went into the VA Hospital in Miles City.
Joe was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. He enjoyed watching old movies, playing chess, watching his favorite sports teams and spending time with his family and friends.
Joe is survived by his children, John and his wife Kristen, Kevin and Jolee, Callie and her husband Sam Delapp, Christopher and his wife Annette, Joe and his wife Emily and Patrick and Audren; 16 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. He is also survived by his brothers George Salo and his wife Dorothy, Bill Scott and his wife Jeanie, sister Elizabeth Henry and her husband Mark and several nieces and nephews and cousins, and his Aunt Fritzie.
Joe is preceded in death by his parents, his son Jeffrey and daughter Mary Heather and two step sisters Marian MacDonald and Patricia Scott.
Joe is dearly loved by his family and will be deeply missed. We would like to thank his extended family, the staff of the VA Nursing Home Care Unit for the wonderful care they have provided over the last 28 years.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, September 2, 2009 at 1:00 p.m. at the VA Chapel. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service. An additional service will be held on Saturday, September 5, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. at the Jewell Funeral Home in Deer Lodge. Interment will follow in the Hillcrest Cemetery in Deer Lodge.
