Kay Louise Wheeler, age 54, of Miles City, passed away on Wednesday, June 30 after a courageous battle with cancer at her daughters home surrounded by her family.
Kay was born in Garrison, ND on January 25, 1956 to Truman and Audrey (Landsiedel) Thompson. Her fathers career in the U.S. Army took them from Garrison to California, Georgia, Japan, Kansas, Texas and finally Hawaii, where she graduated high school and attended college at Leeward Community College.Kay married Larry Wheeler in 1975 and moved to Clarksville, TN. To this union, two daughters, Nikki and Ashley, were born. Kay and Larry were later divorced. She and her girls moved to Miles City in 1990 and son, Jacob, was born in 1992.
Kay received her Associate of Arts Degree from Miles Community College and worked for over 18 years in the Food Service Department. She made many friends with the students and staff over those years. When Kay was not in the college kitchen cooking for her many kids, she was a devoted volunteer for several local charitable organizations. She was involved with the Girl Scouts, Special Olympics, the ACS Relay for Life and especially the Salvation Army, whose mission of helping those in need, became her passion.Kay was active with softball and bowling leagues for several years, but her favorite hobby was spending time with her family, especially reading to her grandchildren and Sunday mornings with her son Jacob, cooking breakfast and reading the paper. She enjoyed crossword puzzles, game shows and was quite proud of her collection of frogs and holiday jewelry.
Kay is survived by her daughters Nikki (Adrian Hostman) Wheeler, Ashley Wheeler, and Angie (Allen) Dodge, all of Miles City, MT; son Jacob of Miles City, MT; mother Audrey Thompson of Garrison, ND; two brothers, David (Gina) Thompson of Minot, ND and Dwight (Thea) Thompson of Berthold, ND; sister, Karen (Patrick) Callahan of Pierre, SD; six grandchildren, Sadie, Seth, Samson and Saul Hostman and Tyler and Kylee Dodge of Miles City, MT; grandmother, Lillian Thompson of Garrison, ND; special friend Ron Lawson of Wyoming; and several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held on Friday, July 2, 2010 with family receiving friends from 4 to 6 p.m. at Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home in Miles City. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, July 3 at 10 a.m. at the First Lutheran Church in Miles City. Interment will follow at Custer County Cemetery.
