Kaya Roze Iron, Meona’hane’e, “ Morning Kills Woman”, was born December 14, 1998 to Angeline Bearcomesout and Albert Iron in Crow Agency, Montana. Maheo called home Kaya Roze Meona’hane’e on January 6th, 2020.
Meona’hane’e attended school in Hardin, grade school followed by her freshman year at Hardin high school. She later attended school out of state in California. Kaya was active in her studies, excelled as an honors student. Kaya loved playing her favorite sport, volleyball. She was selected for Varsity captain of her volleyball team. Kaya was involved in many outdoor activities involving marine biology. She also did volunteer work in school. She was also interested in doing bead work, currently beading a morning star emblem. Kaya graduated with honors from Sherman Indian High school in May 2017.
She was currently enrolled in Southern Oregon University in Ashland Oregon. She was majoring in Outdoor Leadership with a minor in Psychology. She wanted to pursue her dreams of working overseas and then coming back home to work with the youth. She was also interested in biology and was going to make a life out of combining biology and her love for the outdoors. She could always be found expanding her knowledge of nature by reading, researching healthy lifestyles such as eating and fitness, planning family events and outings or doing something spontaneous in nature, such as berry picking with her mom. She could often be found cooking and listening to her favorite music. One of her favorite types of music was traditional Cheyenne Peote songs, which helped to sooth her to sleep on long road trips. Kaya embraced her Cheyenne culture and often attended Native American church and sweats with her mother. Together they would take to trips to spiritual sites such as Devils Tower in Wyoming and Bear Butte in South Dakota. She also participated in the Ft. Robinson spiritual run. She enjoyed watching the Big Horn Battlefield Reenactment every year with her family.
Kaya loved animals (especially her cat Max and the family dog Toby), riding horses with Elauna on her family ranch and helping others; her compassion knew no bounds. She took care of her grandmother whom had been terminal. They are now reunited. She had friends from all over but her best friend she took as a sister was Mariah Donovan, with whom she spent her time whenever she was home. Kaya aka “Yaya roze” by her sister Stefani and Dylan “ dill pickles” little brother who she grew up with. She adored her special niece Kaylee Rose “lil buz’ whom she helped raise for a short time. She made friends wherever she went with ease. Her kind nature made people feel welcome around her. She loved hanging out with Mariah Donovan, Elauna Nelson, Eldora Fatt, Indika Dreamer, Ty Tsabetsaye, Tyrelll, and many others whom she referred to as her family too. These friends are all considered her honorary pallbearers.
She came from a large family on both her mother’s and father’s sides. She was named after her Grandmother, Agnes Bearcomesout “Meona’hane’e”. She took great honor in being asked to carry this name.

Kaya, I met you when you were just a little girl ~ and, had gotten to know you after you grew up. I was impressed with how you were very interested in “organic” food when you & your mom house sit for me on Birney Divide ~ I’m sad that you left “too soon” but, dance and sing with the angels 💖 Now you’re back with your ke’eeh Agnes, she’s probably overjoyed to see you 💔 My deepest condolences to your precious mom and brother 💔

First off, my condolences to Kaya’s family and to the rest of her friends. I remember when we’d all hang out and walk around campus in high school. We’d tell many jokes and tease with our friend Dillon. Kaya was definitely always the level headed one in our group haha. It was always so fun to go to open gym and toss around a volleyball. We’d often end the game on the floor laughing our heads off. She was the kindest person ever and even helped me get through some boy trouble. I remember we were both in the environmental club called the “G team” at Sherman. We’d run around every week to collect recycling bins and then plan our next Beach clean up. There wasn’t ever a full moment with Kaya because our whole gang was always laughing. She was also so smart, intentional, and focused on her studies. She was always honest with herself about how she was feeling. She did what made her happy and at peace, instead of settling so she wouldn’t offend anyone. Her physical presence is going to be absolutely missed. The way I’ve always seen death has been optimistic. Think of it like this, Kaya isn’t necessarily gone, she just had to move out of Earth because she found a better place. We’ll get to see her again when we also find that better place!

I didn’t know Kaya that well, but we had a class together during the Fall term at SOU and occasionally we sat by each other and talked during class discussions. It was clear that Kaya was incredibly smart and passionate about what she had to say, no matter what we were talking about. We were required to give several speeches in that class throughout the term, and every time she got up to speak, I was absolutely captivated by her stories and the way she wrote about her experiences. I wish more than anything that I had gotten to know her better, I will greatly miss hearing what she has to say and seeing her smile in our early morning class. My thoughts are with her family during this difficult time.
