Keeshawn Jesse Scalpcane, Heyowenahun (Yellowhand) born on November 15, 2003, to August “Tiger” and Annette Scalpcane. From the time of his birth, as the youngest of three, Jesse was the “baby” to his parents, grandparents, and siblings. He was a gentle giant; much bigger than his brothers, but still the youngest and most treasured.
He attended St. Labre Academy, Frank Brattin Middle School, and recently finished his freshman year at Lame Deer High School. Keeshawn, as a freshman with the Morning Stars, participated in football, golf, and basketball, and he lettered in all three sports. His “love of the game” of basketball took him to tournaments throughout Indian Country with his Gym Rats, Buffalo Walking, and Run-N-Gun traveling team families. This spring, he qualified to compete with the G.O. Hoops organization and began putting in a substantial amount of time in the gym. His natural athleticism, combined with his extensive on-the-court training, was developing his physicality, strength, speed and quickness for his 6’3” frame, and for his low block power-forward footwork. This opportunity paved a way for him and his team to gain national exposure amongst the best of the best in AAU basketball.
He was a member of both the Northern Cheyenne and Crow Tribe, of the Whistling Water Clan. He was raised in the traditional customs and values, as a respectful and humble young Cheyenne man. He upheld his cultural traditions by providing, in this way for his family. At an early age, Keeshawn sat at the drum Wolfvoice with his dad and brothers: Keanu, Talon, Torey, Bucky, Cyro, Kris, Tristan, and Derek. He participated in the Battle of Little Big Horn Run, and the Ft. Robinson Breakout Run (to honor his grandfather the late LaForce Lee Lonebear). He traveled across the country to compete and share his culture as a traditional dancer. He was an avid outdoorsman who loved to hunt and fish.
A jack of all trades, Keeshawn loved to work with this hands as a natural craftsman. During the 2018-19 school year, he participated in a drum making project which provided prizes for the memorial singing contest for his late uncle Kenny Merrick Jr. He loved to mechanic, weld, dry wall, and fix fence in the pasture. Keeshawn had a solid work-ethic, taking great pride in his finished projects, such as his barrel grill. He was a good cook and loved to man the grill, often cooking for his family, and the staff and students, at Lame Deer High School.
Survivors include his parents, Tiger and Annette; his grandparents, Darlene and Jerry Small, Elmer Yarlott, George and Carmen Scalpcane, and LuJuana Ewing, Great Grandma Delma Yarlott; his siblings, Tasia and Keanu (Payen) Scalpcane, Derek, and Bucky. Jesse had the biggest heart, and he was the best uncle in-the-world to Kash, Kiki, Tyree, Kyren, and Kingston. His God parents Ben (Rae) Lonebear and Anita Rae. He is also survived by his aunts, Sherri Ewing, LaVonne Scalpcane, Shawna (Ken) Deputee, Whisper (Cody), Glendora (George) Goes Ahead, Melissa (Dale) and Eve Highbull. His uncles, Clayton (Megan) Small, Jason (Lacey) Small, Deano (Marie) Yarlott, Gary Jr., Nate (Paula) Stops, Gordy and Cleveland Highbull. Other grandparents include, Laura and Leah Lonebear, Lynwood (Michelle) Ewing, Barbara (Allen) Clubfoot, JC (Annie) Bement, Corliss Highbull, Marlon Yarlott, Tom (Karna) Yarlott, Luvenia (Gary Sr) Rides Horse, and Donnie & Margaret Sonsalla.
Special cousins, Colton (Megan) Small, Payton Sanders, Jenna Sanders, Moses Sanders, Blaine Bement, G’Naiya Small, Kadyen Howe, Terry Spotted Wolf, Bree Deputee (“Bree-Diesel” as Keeshawn called her), Jayvyn Strangeowl, and Journey Emerson. Special teachers, Nikki Melin, Nathan Friesz, Alicia Driesenga, Byron Woods, Steve Ewing, and Brooke Medicinebull.
Keeshawn was preceded in death by, grandparents Jesse and Eldora Bement, Pierre and Mary Ewing, Elmer and Mabel Yarlott Sr, Robert and Jean Lonebear, August and Grace Scalpcane. Uncle Shane Ewing, and brother Cyro Littlebird.
Extended families include: Lonebear, Wolfvoice, Bigman, Sonsalla, HiWalker, Ewing, Harris, Bement, Spottedwolf, Spang, Flying, Small, Yarlott, Stewart, Old Bear, LaForge, White Clay, Morrison, Other Medicine, Old Horn, and Gust.
