Kenneth A. Coulter, age 83, of Brusett, Montana passed away on November 26, 2009 at the Garfield County Nursing Home.

Kenneth was born on September 22, 1926 at Dawson, North Dakota, the son of Eva May Miller and Joseph S. Coulter. When he was two years old, he came to live at Brusett with his grandma, whom he dearly loved, and his grandpa Miller. He was six when his mother married Lawrence Swanser. He lived the remainder of his life on the Swanser homestead. Kenneth attended grade school at the old rock school about a mile south of the house. He attended high school in Jordan, staying at the dorm during the week. After graduation, he joined the Merchant Marines, being discharged in 1946. In 1949, he married Ruth Knapp of Melstone, who he had met at a dance. They celebrated 60 years of marriage in June. During the years to follow, Kenneth was very active in the community. He was a state representative for two years, a county commissioner for 18 years where he served a term as president of the County Commissioners Association. He was a conservation district supervisor for 20 years and was a member of the Fairview Hall Association where he served as secretary-treasurer for many years. He was a member and elder of the Presbyterian Church. He and Ruth had a mail route for about 55 years. Kenneth was a member of the local Farmers Union Board and loved farming and ranching, especially his Beefmaster cows. Kenneth had a very full life. He loved taking his grandsons hunting whether it was for prairie dogs, deer, and antelope or buffalo. He was an avid fisherman. Kenneth had a passion for going to auctions and bring home stuff. His good friend Phil Shawver helped keep his old tractors and trucks running as did Bob Cowin who helped him on the ranch for 35 years.

Kenneth loved his family dearly, although he was not one to show affection too readily.

He survived by his wife, Ruth, of the family ranch, sons Jerry (Barbara) of Broadus, and Rod (Lorri) of the Snow Creek Ranch, son in law Dave McCurdy of Billings, sisters Viola Ware of Jordan, Lois Poulton of Billings and Carol West of Troy, 8 grandchildren, and 11 great grandchildren. Kenneth was preceded in death by his parents, daughter Judy McCurdy, great-grandson Trey Yonkee, sister Dora Swanser and step siblings Frances Hunter, Loney and John Swanser.

Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home of Miles City has been entrusted with the arrangements.
