Kevin Johnston, a postal worker and life-long resident of Miles City, Montana died unexpectedly on December 8, 2020 at the age of 59.
Kevin was born in Miles City on March 9, 1961 to Frank and Emma Johnston. He grew up in a house with one brother (Lowell) and five sisters, Brenda, Wanda, Carla, Marla and Charla. He graduated from CCDHS in 1979 and soon after went to work with his dad at Deluxe Motors as a mechanic. He was a friendly face at M&H gas station for a few years until he found his true calling at the Miles City Post Office where he stayed for the remainder of his life. He enjoyed his fellow postal workers, and he loved getting to conversate with the people of Miles City, catching up with old friends that came through, or making new ones. He would greet everyone with a warm smile, a friendly hello, and genuine concern for his customers and friends.
In his younger years, Kevin enjoyed building hotrods with his brother and Derby cars with his friends. He never missed a chance to attend a Demolition Derby with his good friend Mark Nielsen or a cold beer at the Yellowstone Tavern. Kevin loved spending time with his kids, grandkids, and his nieces and nephews. Whether it was building Joe’s first derby car, fishing with Gregory, or getting his hair and nails done by the girls, he was always down for whatever. He loved the outdoors and thoroughly enjoyed hunting and fishing when he got the chance.
Only after he found the love of his life, did he settle down. Kevin and Mary were friends before lovers, but Kevin was adamant that he would make Mary his wife and he finally did in 1995. The two of them loved to spend their free time lounging at home watching one of the thousands of movies they own or jumping in the truck, cranking up the tunes and taking long country drives to wherever the wind would take them. Kevin loved spending time with his family and often planned BBQ’s and Airport Inn gathers to bring everyone together. On Christmas he often showed up in a Santa suit to surprise all the kids with a bag full of presents. His warm smile, playful spirit, and loving heart will live on through all the lives that he has touched.
Kevin is survived by a sister Marla Malley, brother Lowell Johnston, wife Mary and children: Chris Hibbs, Gregory Carlson (Rheannon), grandkids: Jeremy, Issabell, Emma, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Godspeed, Kevin.

The kindest postal worker ever. May your family find peace in the memories of his kindness.
Dave Schott says
In the latter part of the 1970s Kevin had a motor route delivering the Miles City Star to the outskirts of Miles City. For a time my brother Don helped Kevin on the delivery route and occasionally I, the little brother, got to tag along. At the end of the route Kevin would take us to Taco John’s and buy us each a half pint of chocolate milk. That was the best-tasting chocolate milk ever. Those were fun times. I felt pretty lucky being able to ride along.
The last time I saw Kevin was about 5 years ago when I was mailing a package from the Miles City post office. Kevin was the same old guy he had always been. It was great seeing him again after so many years and I left looking forward to the next time I would see him. Alas, “next time” never came.
Kevin, you were a good man and you will be greatly missed.
My sympathy to all of the Johnston family.
Gail Harden says

For me, he was like a Velveteen Rabbit–so genuine, loving, and caring that others could not help but respond in kind. He was “Real”. Kevin was one of the very rare people that not only saw people in need, but stepped up to do what he could to help. I will miss his cheery wave and “How’ya doing” when I went to get the mail. This is such heart breaking news, Kevin was such a pleasant, wonderful, kind person. Many years ago when our kids were small my mother in law Marie Elwood, hired Kevin to be Santa Claus for our kids. I hadn’t seen Kevin for years but I recognized him right off by his eyes. Our daughter was scared to death of him and Kevin tried so hard to get her to feel at ease with him. I sat on his lap hoping to help Amanda, but it didn’t work. He was a special man, a bright light just went out in this world. Our sympathy to all his family, may God give you His peace at this time. Garth Sleight says
I saw this announcement just now and exclaimed aloud, “Oh no!!!” I thoroughly enjoyed having Kevin as a student many years ago at MCC. When we did a brain teaser activity in my Interpersonal Communication class in the guise of a “perception exercise,” the next class period Kevin brought me a clothes pin with a washer glued to it. He said, “What’s this?” After I struggled unsuccessfully to come up with the right answer, he smiled and said, “A washer and drier!” I still have that “washer and drier” and show it to my students. That was typical of Kevin’s sense of humor. It carried over to the Post Office, where we still talked about the “washer and drier.” I am devastated to think that he will not be at the P.O. counter! RIP, Kevin, so sorry to see you leave too soon.
Rob Shipley says
I always loved Kevin. He was SO kind and SO quiet about everything. Some of you may not accept this well, but, one (1) small reason why I actually loved Kevin was………he bought the Marshfield 14 x 80 3 Br mobile home which Mary Shipley bought for Elaine and I in March, 1978, when I worked for Jim Larson’s Future Homes selling mobes.
Mom gave it to Elaine and I even before we married, May 8, 1978. Years later when we divorced I sold it to best friend, Loyd Ketchum, and he completely remodeled it to like new condition and enjoyed living in it for several years before he sold it to Kevin. Small item, perhaps. I have driven to Loyd and Ashlee’s home many 100s of times. Was there even this morning. Each time I ever drove over there I always enjoyed seeing my *old* home being well enjoyed by Kevin and his family. I plan being with Kevin in eternity forever and ever and ever.
All my love,
Robbie
