Andrew Lance Tonn, age 58, of Miles City passed away on Friday, September 3, 2010 at the Holy Rosary Healthcare Center after a courageous health battle and a love for life.
Lance was born in August 10, 1952 at Holy Rosary Hospital in Miles City, Montana, the son of Helder and Virginia Tonn. Lance attended country school near his home on the Monte Place south of Miles City. When Lance started the 7th grade, he came to Miles City to attend Washington Middle School and continued in Miles City until graduating from Custer County High School in 1970. In the fall of 1970, Lance started college at Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma, Washington, graduating in 1974. He then attended Law School at Gonzaga University in Spokane, Washington and graduated in 1977. He worked for one year at the Montana Supreme Court and in 1978 he moved back home to Miles City with his wife Jan and began the practice of law at Lucas and Monaghan, later to become Lucas & Tonn, of which he became the sole owner in 2009. He continued the practice of law until his passing. After a brief hospitalization in Seattle, he returned home Wednesday afternoon where he was greeted by friends and family at the Miles City Airport. He spent two days in Holy Rosary Hospice where his friends and family far and near came to be with him.
Lance is survived by his son Drew Tonn of Salt Lake City, UT; his wife Linda Tonn of Miles City, MT; brother Bruce Tonn; and cousins: Mike Tonn of Billings, MT; Will Tonn of Bozeman, MT; Libby Sylvis of Bozeman, MT; Borisse Paulin of New York City, NY; Ann Quast of Buffalo, WY; and Cheryl Tonn of Miles City, MT; and his family: Jessi and Svenja Kempin, Deb Tonn, Chelsea and Terell Patterson, Suzy Musser, Joanie Bechtle and Steve Curry.
Attorneys thought Lance was a rancher with a law degree, ranchers thought Lance was an attorney with a ranch; but those who knew him best knew his passion was the ranch where the roots of his legacy began.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, September 7, 2010 with the family to receive friends from 4 to 6 pm at Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home in Miles City. Ron Merritt says
I recently learned the sad news of Lance Tonn’s passing. I knew Lance as a freshman at PLU and always thought highly of him.
Rev. Tim Brueckner says
Lance and I were classmates at PLU. He was a good friend. He once invited me to work on the ranch for the summer but I was fishing in Alaska and couldn’t give up my spot on the boat. I have often wondered what that summer would have been like on the ranch in Montana. I will see him in heaven and maybe he can show me what I missed. I’m sorry for your loss. Tim
