Larry was born on February 18, 1944 to John and Helen Herman in Billings, Montana. Larry’s father died June 21, 1945 and his mother remarried Walter Miller and Larry was raised as if he was Walt’s own son. He grew up and attended schools in Billings and was a member of the the first graduating class of Billings West High School in 1962. Following his schooling, Larry joined the United States Navy and completed a class “A” Naval Air Technical Training Unit School in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and was a member of the honor guard for President John F. Larry became Third Class Aviation Crash and Recue Petty Officer while assigned to the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Hornet (CVS-12). Larry grew up dreaming of becoming a firefighter. All of his military schools and training were beneficial when he was honorably discharged in May of 1967. Larry served honorably and with pride in what is now known as the Vietnam Era. Larry moved to Seattle, Washington in February of 1968 and attended Seattle Community College for a brief stint and took a job at a paint company in April of 1968. Larry left there in 1972 and moved to Oakland, California. Larry received various Firefighting certificates form Sacramento State University and Santa Clara County Emergency Medical Technician, Fire and Arson Investigation, and retired after 28½ years of Fire Department Service and was a board certified Fire Emergency Specialist when he retired from Lockheed Martin in July of 1992. Larry took a position with the fire department in the Marshall Islands in April of 1974. Larry terminated his employment there due to a family emergency. When Larry returned to Oakland, California in July of 1974 he continued schooling and training for fire department duties. In June of 1975 he became a proud member of the Naval Supply Center Fire Department. He transferred to Hamilton Air Force Base in Marine County in the City of Novato, California where served as Battalion Fire Chief. He transferred to the Naval Air Station in 1977 and then to the Naval Security Group Fire Department in 1978. He renewed his emergency Medical Technician Certification in San Bernardino, California and transferred to the Naval Shipyard Fire Department in Vallejo, where he served until May of 1983 when he transferred to the Lockheed Martin Fire Department in Sunnyvale, California, retiring in 1991. Larry moved back to Gardiner, Montana in April of 1993, where he delivered mail in Yellowstone Park Monday through Saturday until the contract completion in October of 1993.

My sincere condolences to the family of Larry Dee Herman – I am sorry to hear of your loss. May you find comfort in many beautiful memories and talents of Mr. Herman at this difficult time. The Bible gives us hope that soon the Creator will end all suffering, pain, and death. (Revelation 21:4) Also we have the hope of being with our loved ones who have been resurrected (John 5:28-29). The promise of Paradise, the perfect conditions God intended for mankind will be fulfilled (Ps. 37:11) including God’s “will being done as in Heaven also up on Earth “(Matt 6:9, 10). Please be comforted by the many hopeful promises in the Bible. (John 17:3).

Larry Dee, I remember the time we went to the hotel where the Dolphins were staying during the week of their Super Bowl against the 49ers. You kept calling me Ray Wersching to make the other visitors think that I was the famous 49er Field Goal Kicker. I remember your fundraisers with the Lark Manor Convalescent Home that was held at Christmas time and you would get presents and give them to the elderly that were residing in the home. Take care Larry, you were a very kind and giving person.
