Larry Dee Martin, age 73, of Kirby passed away on Wednesday, March 23, 2011 at his home surrounded by his family.
Larry was born September 29, 1937 the son of Iver Scotty and Dorothy Martin in Glasgow, MT. He grew up and attended schools in Glasgow. At the age of 17, after graduating from Glasgow High School he made his home in Kirby, MT. He was united in marriage to Caroline Ann Small on June 23, 1960. Together they ranched in Kirby, which he continued to do for the rest of his life. In 1961 they decided they wanted a barrel racer and so April was born. A year later they added a pole bender to their family with Misty. They prayed for a bareback rider in Jay T, but got a bull rider instead. And finally, eleven years later, Larry and Caroline were surprised with CT, the Naval Officer of the family.Larry had a passion for bareback riding and was instrumental in the creation of the Montana Cowboy Hall of Fame in Wolf Point, MT. He won three trophy saddles. In 1963 and 1967 he received the NRCA Champion Bareback Rider and in 1981, he received the Old Timers All Around saddle. He loved the rodeo trail. Larry was also a wrangler in the movies Wild Times, Little Big Man, Walks Far Woman, Return to Lone'some Dove and Endangered Species. Larry had numerous other passions, he loved to fly, chase coyotes on snowmobiles, race chariots teams and Indian relay races. He also enjoyed following his nephew, Jess Martins pro rodeo saddle bronc riding career.
He was preceded in death by his parents Scotty and Dorothy Martin; his brother Lee Martin; brother-in-law John Tischmack and his nephew Rodney Martin.Larry is survived by his wife of fifty years, Caroline Ann Small; his children, April (Jed) Chalfant, Misty (Mike) Arnio, JT (Marla) Martin and CT (Holly) Martin; his brothers, Doug (Shirley) Martin and Gary (Sheila) Martin; his sister Lou Ann Tischmack; his grandchildren, Stacey Martin, Charelle Beatty, TC Martin, Bailey and Miah Chalfant; his great grandchildren, Auriana and Tristan; his adopted children, Kim Just, Dane Dahle, Scott Koltiska and Fred Brien. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held on Monday, March 28, 2011 from 9:00am to 12:30pm in the Chapel of Stevenson and Sons Funeral Home in Forsyth, MT.
