On august 15, 2014, Laurel celebrated her 90th birthday with family and friends. Three weeks later to the day on September 5, 2014, Laurel had her final celebration of life and went to join her Heavenly Father.
Laurel Jean Shook, age 90. Of Billings, MT, formerly of Miles City, MT, was born on August 15, 1924 in Harlowton, Montana, the daughter of Thomas E. and Edna M. (Howard) Wilkerson. She joined brothers Tom and Bill and was later followed by sister Virginia. She attended Edison Elementary School and three years at Harlowton High School before moving to Miles City where she graduated from Custer County High School in 1942. She attended one year of college at Miles Community College. Laurel served in the United States Navy as a member of the WAVES from December of 1944 to May of 1946.
Laurel met Glen E. Shook when working at the Range Riders in Miles City, noticing how his blue eyes matched his blue shirt. Glen and Laurel shared a love story lasting 50 years until Glen’s death in May 1997. This partnership including successfully managing the Standard Oil bulk plant for many years, all the while raising their 5 daughters and caring for their widowed mothers.
Laurel worked in the Custer County Clerk and Recorder Office for a number of years. She was a member of the VFW Auxiliary, Miles City Quilters, Range Riders Reps, and was active in Miles City Genealogy. She was a long time member of the First Presbyterian Church and served in many positions from Sunday school supervisor to elder.
Laurel is survived by her children: Carol (Bill) Clepper of Anderson, TX; Nancy Gibson of Federal Way, WA; Glynis (Frank) Brooks of Cat Spring, TX; Valerie (A.J.) Bone of Billings, MT; and Lorna (Pinky) Brennan of Shepherd, MT, as well as 10 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Glen, two brothers and one sister. Laurel’s family would like to give a huge shout out to the staff and residents at Butterfly Homes where Laurel has resided the last 2 years. The caring and devotion combined to make them our family, too.

Dear daughters of Laurel, I have one memory of your mother that stands out. One year the FHA club at CCHS had an auction and your mom ‘bought’ me to do whatever at your home. I remember it more as a play day with a bunch of girls. God Bless you all and remember the good times.

Although I was not close to your family, I fondly remember your parents.
Their bulk fuel business – as we had fuel delivered to our ranch, and your mom’s beauty, inside and out. Evident still in the photo you shared of her!
Praying for comfort in these days, weeks and months to come. God bless you all!
Susan Ottesen says
Laurel was a dear friend of my grandmother, Ethel Major. There was always the weekly suppers and it seemed like they always had some sort of an adventure to go on. May she rest in peace.

To all of the “Shook” girls and their families. What a beautiful lady. I never knew your mom to be unhappy when Nancy had me over. She was always welcoming and fun. I remember her trying to teach me piano, what a patient person. I am sure I was her one and only failure. I did visit with her a couple times at West Park Village. She was still a beautiful soul. Take care all of you! She is at peace and will be there to greet each of you.

Mom Shook – a lovely woman who opened her home and her heart to so many. She accepted us all and was patient, kind, supportive and always inspired us to do our best. My life is richer because of her and I am blessed to have had the privilege of knowing and learning from her. I will miss receiving her annual Christmas letters with all the news about her Family that she loved so dearly and her hand written notes within. I will miss her deeply.

My thoughts and prayers are with all of you in the passing of my Aunt and your lovely Mother. Wish I had known her more but the memories I have are wonderful. I look at the family pictures from the reunion in 1991 when Tim, Tyler & I were in Miles for the Shook-Wilkerson reunion…good memories. God’s Richest blessings to all of the family…Wanda Shook Burke
