Leona So’taa’e (Suhtai Woman) Limberhand died April 26, 2014 at the Billings Clinic in Billings, MT after battling a long illness. She was 71 years old.
Born in Lame Deer, MT, a daughter of Henry Blackwolf and Pauline Flying Blackwolf. Leona was also a 4th generation direct descendant of Chief Dull Knife, which she was very proud of. She attended school at St. Labre Indian School. She later attended college at Eastern Montana College in Billings, MT where she pursued a teaching degree. In her earlier years she was a switchboard operator, an aide, a mailing clerk and a teacher.
On January 19, 1962, she married her soul mate, Herman Limberhand. The couple made their home in Lame Deer, Montana. Leona then devoted her life to raising her four children and caring for her grandchildren. Leona loved playing bingo, handgame, cards, playing Yahtzee with Lorraine Robinson and visiting with family and friends. She would often travel throughout Indian Country with her buddy Derek Knowshisgun to play handgame and bingo. Leona loved watching her grandchildren take part in sports. They were her pride and joy and she cherished each and every one of them.
Leona is survived by her son Gavin (Lori) Limberhand of Kirby MT, two daughters Janet (Rick) Wolfname of Busby MT, and Roni Rae (Marlin) Brady of Lame Deer MT. A sister Lavina Blackwolf of Lame Deer MT, two brothers Michael Bearcomesout of Lame Deer MT and Bruce White SR of Crow Agency MT, her grandchildren Don Limberhand (Who she raised as her own), Skyler Limberhand, Ashley Limberhand, Jessica Clampitt, Brandon Clampitt, Kristen Brady NeiderKlein, Katisha Brady Stops, Kourtney Brady, Kyle Brady, BJ Briggs, Shann Cole Wolfname, Jordan Wolfname, Kiann Wolfname and Ricki Lee Wolfname. Her great grandchildren Deanna Limberhand, Tearra Limberhand, Rodney Limberhand, Sophie Hamblin Sydney Hamblin, Madison Limberhand, Brandon Waters, Jasmine Waters, Zabian Clampitt, Avaya Stops, Dalonzo Stops and Willis Little Bear. One goddaughter Deanna Brady Rojas of Honolulu, Hawaii.
Leona was preceded in Death by her husband Herman Limberhand, her son Rodney Limberhand, her father Henry Blackwolf and her mother Pauline Blackwolf. She had other relatives precede her in death however, they are too numerous to name.
Leona was loved and will be missed dearly by her children, grandchildren, relatives and friends. We want to thank all of those that came to see Leona for the prayers, support and strength that each of you offered during this difficult time. A special thank you to the staff at the Billings Clinic ICC Department for their tender loving care of our mother.
Wake services will be held on April 29th, 2014 at 7:00 PM at the Blessed Sacrament Parish. Funeral services will be held on April 30th, 2014 at 10:00 AM at the Blessed Sacrament Parish in Lame Deer, Montana. Burial will be held at the Family Cemetery in Muddy. Leona has been a part of our family all my life, marrying my brother Herman. She was always a good person with a good humor, a good mother, wife and grandmother. She devoted her time to her family which was very important to her. I loved family gatherings because it was always spent at their house or brother Bennys’.
