In Memory Of

LeRoy Hirsch, age 76, of Miles City

July 1, 1939 – February 14, 2016

LeRoy Hirsch, age 76, of Miles City passed away on Sunday, February 14, 2016 at his home in Miles City surrounded by his family and his dog Precious.

LeRoy was born on July 1, 1939 in Ismay, Montana to Ellen and Emil Hirsch. LeRoy was the first of four children, Patty (Dave) Berg, Caroline Rischer (Lee C0x) and Don (Colleen) Hirsch. The family moved to Rock Springs in 1951 where the homestead was bought and the kids grew up. LeRoy grew up in Rock Springs, attending the small one room school house until high school where he made the trip to Miles City to attend CCDHS. While attending school, he worked for Peavy Elevator until 1956 when he decided at 17 to join the National Guard. He attended basic training but chose to go back home to help out on the farm until he met his future wife. LeRoy met Pearl in 1957 in Miles City and married her on September 17, 1960 in Miles City, Montana at Trinity Lutheran Church. Together they moved to California for a short 4 months before deciding that Montana was home for them and where they wanted to raise their children. From 1960 to 1961 LeRoy worked for Ivan Dallman in Forsyth farming until he decided to continue his own farming as well as custom farming for local surrounding farms.

In 1966, they welcomed the twin boys Shane and Shawn and in 1971 their last son Chad was born. In 1967 he began working at Mac’s Frontierland as a mechanic and worked for almost ten years before deciding to go back to farming out north. Meanwhile LeRoy and his brother Don owned a hog operation until 1975 when the family dissolved partnership and LeRoy focused solely on custom wheat farming as well as his own wheat farming until 1998. In 1998 LeRoy decided it was time to slow down a bit and focused on his grandchildren and primarily farming the Hirsch property. LeRoy woke up each morning before dawn and worked on his place until dusk only stopping to eat when Pearl or one of his grandchildren would radio him in to have lunch and dinner on the CB radio. The “Ranch” as it is known to the family is where each grandchild learned how to drive, fed bunnies and watched lifetime movies whit LeRoy sitting in the recliner eating popcorn until way pas their bedtime.

In 2007, LeRoy finally made the choice to retire and enjoy his time with his family and traveling. LeRoy and Pearl enjoyed jumping in the car, with their pug Precious, and driving until they decided to stop, usually in California. The past two years LeRoy battled with pancreatic cancer however he never lost his spirit or his sense of humor always giving everyone a hard time and visiting with everyone who stopped over to say hello.

LeRoy is survived by his wife Pearl Hirsch; his three boys: Shane (Gretchen) Hirsch, Shawn (Lora) Hirsch and Chad Hirsch as well as his eight grandchildren: Amber (Alex) Helland, Brittany Hirsch, Taeler Hirsch, Brody Hirsch, Austin Hirsch, Riley Hirsch, Dylan Hirsch & McKenzie Hirsch.
