Early on the morning of July 5, 2016, Lester Whitney passed away peacefully from natural causes. Lester was being visited and comforted by family members at Holy Rosary Healthcare in Miles City, Montana at the time of passing. Lester was 86 years old.
Lester Allen Whitney was born on January 17, 1930 in Powderville, Montana to Louis and Cora Whitney. He was the fourth of five brothers. Lester joined the US Army in 1950 and was honorably discharged in 1954. In 1952 he married Florene Cline and together they had two children, Vivian (Whitney) and Doreen (Waterland). They later divorced and Lester remarried in 1960 to Betty Mackay. Together they had a daughter Sandra (Whitney). Later they were divorced. Lester worked and lived in eastern Montana for most of his life, except for a time in central California working in various industries.
Lester was a member of the Moose Lodge, and the American Legion in Baker for 35 continuous years. Lester enjoyed travelling, listening to his music collection, working his word puzzles and doting on his grand and great-grandchildren.
Lester is survived by daughters Doreen Waterland and Sandra Whitney, grandchildren Buck Brown (Lisa), Mitzi Abbott (Joel) and Lucas Waterland (Jennifer) and many great grandchildren and nieces and nephews. Lester is preceded in death by parents Louis and Cora, brothers Earl, Bill, Harold, Claire and Elwin and daughter Vivian.
Visitation will be held on Friday, July 8, 2016 at Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home with family receiving friends from 4:00-6:00 p.m. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, July 9, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. at Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home in Miles City. Interment will follow in the Eastern Montana State Veteran’s Cemetery in Miles City with full military honors. Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home of Miles City is in charge of the arrangements.
