In Memory Of

Lewellyn Joseph Cantrell

Visitation: Sunday, December 30, 2007 at Clayton Stevenson Memorial Chapel in Wolf Point.

Prayer Service: Sunday, December 30, 2007 at at 7:00 p.m. at Clayton Stevenson Memorial Chapel in Wolf Point.

Funeral Service: Monday, December 31, 2007 at 10:00 a.m. at the Clayton Stevenson Memorial Chapel in Wolf Point.

Lewellyn (Rusty) Cantrell was born in Poplar, Mt. on 11-30-29 to Otto Cantrell Sr. and Mary Little Bull. He spent his adolescent years growing up in Portland Oregon in the 1940s. Rusty enlisted in the army in 1948, served 2 terms and was wounded twice. He was honorably discharged in 1956. Service life totaled 9 years. He was entitled to the Purple Heart with 1 Oak Leaf cluster, The Good Conduct Medal, Korean Service Medal with 2 Bronze Service Stars, United Nations Service Medal, and the Combat Infantryman Badge. Rusty has earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Human Rehabilitation Services and an Associate of Arts Degree at Eastern Montana College, in Billings Mt., he has also completed course work toward a masters degree at the University in Honolulu Hawaii.

Positions include Program Director of the Assiniboine Sioux Vocational Rehabilitation Program: Dui instructor: Courts Prevention and Training Officer of the Fort Peck Tribal Courts: Lay Advocate: Resident Training and Counseling Coordinator: and Alcohol Abuse Counselor: Dui Instructor: He is a former member of the Board of Directors: Billings American Indian Counsel: Montana United Indian Association: Governors Poverty Counsel: Worked with the Hope Ranch; and Spotted Bull Treatment Center, and for the last 15 years he has been busy with Consultant work in Rehabilitation, he has been a founder of the Consortia of Administrators for Native American Rehabilitation (CANAR), former Director of the Red Feathered Eagle Vocational Rehabilitation Program on the Wind River Reservation at Fort Washakie, WY, former Director of the Assiniboine Sioux Vocational Rehabilitation Program at Fort Peck, MT. And since had been on his own doing consultant work during his retirement, traveling far, to and from presentations and conferences while he could, but no longer, while his illness has taken over.

He has focused his entire life toward educating and helping members of his tribe abstain from alcohol and drugs, but primarily recover from alcoholism. All of his energies and employment activities have been centered on to rehabilitating and guiding Native Americans to better themselves. He lived a productive life-always giving, mostly of himself, he was well liked and respected. We will miss his quiet manner, his teasing nature and most of all, his smile.

Rusty is survived by his 2 children, Ann Ramson of Rayville Louisiana, and Curtis Cantrell of Wolf Point. He is survived by his brothers Steve Greyhawk Sr., Newton Cantrell, Otto Cantrell Jr., Cowboy Cantrell, Dave Cantrell, Richard Cantrell, Art Cantrell, and Virgil Cantrell. His surviving sisters include Hazel Cantrell, Emma may, Vivian Martin, Mary Wolf Child, Ida Youngman, Emily Cantrell, Anny Cantrell, and Roxanne Cantrell. He has 7 Grandchildren, 4 Great Grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.


He was preceded in death by his Mother Mary Little Bull, his Father Otto Cantrell, his brothers Wayne Cantrell, Frank McConnell, Merle Lucas, and Courtney Cantrell.

Lewellyns Journey to his Creator has been fulfilled, and will be missed by all.

Visitation will be 6 8 p.m. Sunday, December 30, 2007 at Clayton Stevenson Memorial Chapel, Wolf Point, MT, with a service at 7 p.m. The funeral service will be 10 a.m. Monday, December 31, 2007 at Clayton Stevenson Memorial Chapel, Wolf point, MT. Interment will be in St. Anns Cemetery, Poplar, MT
