In Memory Of

Lloyd Butcher, age 66, of Miles City.

March 21, 1952 – October 14, 2018

Lloyd Robert Butcher passed away on October 14, 2018 at his home in Miles City surrounded by his family and a very close friend after a two year battle with cancer.

Lloyd was born on the first day of spring, March 21, 1952 to Lloyd Howard Butcher and Beth Patricia (Fairbanks) Butcher. Lloyd grew up and attended school in Miles City. Lloyd joined the US Marines and served two years. Lloyd was a proud Vietnam veteran and a life-long member of the VFW in Miles City. In his younger years he built fence with his uncle Ralph Bair on ranches all over Southeastern Montana. On October 25, 1975 he and Colette Pedder Butcher were married in Forsyth and they have lived In Miles City since then and this is where they raised their two daughters, Jody and Alex.

Lloyd was a hard worker and was employed at Miles City Ready Mix, Doeden Construction and Prince Inc. before beginning his 24-year career with BLM. He was a heavy equipment operator, operating equipment on BLM land all over the Miles City District. While at BLM he also worked with the weed program, helped during fire season, dressed in the Smoky Bear costume for parades and especially enjoyed working the BLM wild horse/burro adoptions. He never turned down helping in any department that asked for his help. Once he retired he did not sit idle for long. He worked for John Muggli Inc., the Custer County Road Department and Jarrett Construction until his health would no longer allow it.

Lloyd enjoyed spending time in his greenhouse and produced vegetable plants that were a hot commodity to the gardeners of the area. He also enjoyed processing beef, pigs, wild game making the best jerky, salami, polish sausage and the very best homemade cream of chicken noodle soup around. Lloyd liked to hunt, fish, garden and spend time camping/boating with his family.

Lloyd was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers Leon Emeline and Dan Emeline. He is survived by his wife Colette, daughters Jody (Jase) Kinsey, Alex Butcher and his special grandsons, Jax Eli Kinsey, triplets, Cade Colin Kinsey, Ian Adam Kinsey and Milo Brice Kinsey and has another grandson, Alexander, due to arrive in December. Lloyd is also survived by his brothers Douglas Emeline, David (Velma) Bourn of Miles City and sisters Linda Coppedge of Federal Way, Washington, Alice (Wayne) Nile of Miles City and Judy (Ed) Henderson of Billings. He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews and cousins and very special friends, the Don Jones family and the Mark Bartholomew family.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, October 16, 2018 at Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home with family receiving friends from 4:00-6:00 p.m. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, October 17, 2018 at 1:00 p.m. at Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home.  Interment will follow in the Custer County Cemetery with full military honors.  Condolences may be set to the family by visiting:  www.stevensonandsons.com or may be sent to the family at 2316 Bridge, Miles City, MT 59301.

    Colette, Jody, and Alex,
My heart is broken for all of you. Lloyd was one of my favorites. I have so many wonderful memories! He is the reason I work for BLM. He was my saving grace when I was a seasonal. I remember that he called the girls his ‘chicks’. When Alex was little and had to have surgery he was a nervous wreck! He was a wonderful teacher, patient yet fun. We have had so many laughs over the years. He was ornery and sweet all at the same time. He loved the 3 of you very, very much!!! Prayers and hugs to you all!

Colette, Jody, Alex. Sisters and brothers and all of Lloyd’s extended family, along with all of Lloyd’s many many friends.

There are simply no words that can express my sympathy for Lloyd’s family and my own sense of loss. I don’t even know where to start, though lord knows I’ve had plenty of time to think about it. I’ve been a friend of Lloyd since he was four years old when I hit him in the head with a dirt clod. I used to hide in a ditch outside his house and holler, “Lordy, come out and play.” I had to because his mom was hopping mad for me beaning Lloyd. It got better from then on. We worked on farms and ranches, did construction work and traveled all the way to Seattle before the draft got us and forced us back home and off to the military. A few rough times in our lives, but so many, many more good times with our families. Lloyd was my first, my oldest and best friend in life and I am going to miss the hell out of him.
What really gets me is that our lives happened so fast, so damn fast and not nearly long enough.

I am so very sorry for your loss. I worked with Lloyd at BLM when I started here years ago in fire. You were so right when you said that Lloyd never turned down helping any department at the BLM, and he was the BEST at everything he helped with! He taught me a thing or two, and he is still missed to this day. You are all in my thoughts and prayers. He will be missed.

Lloyd and Colette were my favorite neighbors. Lloyd helped with so many projects that made positive outcomes in the country. My time fishing and hunting with him was always full of humor and great stories. I’ll my miss my friend. I still tell my family about all the good times we had in the garage making jerky and smoking turkeys for holiday gifts. May peace be with Lloyd and family.
