Lonnie Ray Steele, Sr.WanaCunka-Zi(Yellow Shield)Lonnie Ray (Melbourne) Steele, age 62, of Frazer Montana left and went to heaven to be with his wife, daughters, and family on August 5, 2006 at the Poplar Community Hospital.
Lonnie was born on November 20, 1943 to Agnes Scott and paternal father James Melbourne Sr.; raised by Billy Steele in Poplar, Montana. He grew-up in Oregon, and various other places. He attended school in Stephan, South Dakota where he graduated. After High School he went on to further his education at Haskell and Missoula. He worked various jobs which took him all over North Dakota, South Dakota, Montana and Okland, California where he met his first wife. From that marriage came two daughters, Lonette (Steele) BlackCrow and Quannah Steele. In 1979 Lonnie met the love of his life, Marilyn Jeri Jackson. They were married the traditional way in 1981, and from this marriage he had Fawn Larae Steele and Lonnie Rae Steele Jr. Together there was nothing they could not do. They opened the L & M Quick Stop, Baby Lonnies Beer Mug, Twin Cloud Construction, and L & M Concession.Lonnie was very much into his Native American Culture, and he practiced it often. He and his family went to the Sun Dances in Wyoming and Crow Dogs Paradise in South Dakota. Lonnie loved to Traditional Dance. He looked forward to the summer months so he could meet up with special friends Harry Three Stars, Sr., Phillip Smoker, Sr., and Dallas Howard, Jr. Lonnie also liked playing bingo, poker machines, and hunting, but his biggest joy was putting out his wifes fires around Frazer during clean up.
Lonnie is preceded in death by his wife, Marilyn Jeri Steele; two daughters, Fawn Larae and Quannah Steele; mother, Agnes Scott, paternal father, James Melbourne, Sr.; father who raised him, Billy Steele; brothers, Dorrance Steele, Sr., Fred Steele, Sr., Jimmy Melbourne, Jr.; sisters, Marlene Steele, Trivian Tiny Moore, and Carlene Steele; grand parents, Theresa Foote, Anne Knorring, Richard Steele, Ray Scott; mother and father-in-law, Wilson and Josphine Jackson.
He is survived by his son, Lonnie (Morgan) Steele, Jr., of Frazer, MT; daughter, Lonette (Steele) BlackCrow of Hays, MT; stepson, Robin Martell, step daughter Angie Toce and special niece, Delane Blount, all of Frazer, MT; sisters, Thelma Blount and Elliott Todd of Frazer, MT, Theresa (Kenneth) Smoker and Mary Rose Melbourne, all of Poplar, MT; sister and brother-in-laws, Merle Clampitt, Sue Laraque, Shari (Joe) Betson, Sr., Farrel Strahs, Bobbi (John) Doney, Rosi (Phillip) Smoker, Sr., and Roxy Long; twelve grand children, Selena, Larissa, Darrin Jr., John Jr., Cole, Devan, Slater, Mariaha, Katlynn, Angaleigh, Jasmine, Cletus Keiser, and one grand daughter on the way.
Lonnie is loved and will be missed.
A Wake will be held Tuesday, August 8 at the Poplar Cultural Center starting at 3:30 p.m. with a Prayer service at 7 p.m. His funeral will be held 10 a.m. Wednesday, August 9, 2006 at the Frazer Community Center. Interment will follow at the St. Josephs Cemetery in Frazer
