In Memory Of

Lucille Varnado

Visitation: will be held on Thursday, September 16, 2004. Family will receive friends from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home in Miles City

Funeral Services: will follow on Friday, September 17, 2004 at 2:00 p.m. at Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home in Miles City.

Interment: Custer County Cemetery in Miles City.

E. Lucille Varnado, age 93, of Miles City passed away Friday, September 10, 2004, at Holy Rosary Extended Care in Miles City.

Edna Lucille was born March 1, 1911, in Skedee, Oklahoma, a daughter of Vinton and Susie (Lancaster) Wildman. The family traveled to Montana by train shortly afterwards, arriving March 11, 1911. They homesteaded northeast of Knowlton, Custer County, where Lucille attended grade school. She also attended school at Sumatra, Mont., where her brother, Herb, was a teacher. Lucille was employed by the Bradshaw Ranch and as a housekeeper by Miles City physician, Dr. Andrews. Lucille marriedOrvel Lloyd Campbell on June 11, 1928; they ranched on Powder River until their divorce in April 1947. Lucille then moved to Miles City where she worked for JC Penney. She married Grayson Varnado Jr. on March 4, 1953. They lived in Buffalo, Wyo., and Louisiana before settling in Billings, Mont. Lucille worked for Sears and at Coles Department Store as a seamstress. She also sold Stanley Home Products. Grayson passed away in 1968. Lucille continued to live in Billings until the late 70s when she returned to Miles City and her historic home on SouthStrevell. She lived there until a week before her death.

Lucille was an accomplished cook who took pride in settling a beautiful table. She enjoyed taking photographs and captured precious scenes of ranch and family life on Powder River. Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren were dear to her. In later years, she found joy in making latch hook rugs.

Lucille is survived by her daughter, Alice F. (John) Janssen of Miles City, Mont.; a daughter-in-law, Patricia Campbell, of the Powder River ranch; a brother, Everett Lee (Sue) Wildman,Penngrove, Calif.; grandchildren: John R. (Lana) Janssen, Jeri L. (Rob) Dobrowski, Dallas (Connie) Janssen, Cassie (Bill) Erickson and Carmen (Chuck) Cavill; great-grandchildren: Jennifer and Brian Dobrowski; Rosalie and Andrew Schanz; Libby Erickson; Cody, Cara and Catie Cavill; John Wyatt and Dillon Janssen.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Grayson Varnado; son, Kenneth Campbell; brothers: Herbert (Stella) and Elmer (Rachel) Wildman; sisters: Alma (Frank) Conner, Dorothy (Clarence) Brown, and Margaret (Herman)Klickman; three grandchildren: Carson Campbell,Kary Schanz, and Diane Janssen; and three great-grandchildren: Bruce Dobrowski, Vaughn Schanz and Emily Erickson.

Visitation will be Thursday, September 16, 2004, in the chapel in Miles City. Family will receive friends on Thursday from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. in the chapel in Miles City. Funeral services will be held Friday, September 17, 2004, at 2:00 p.m. at Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home in Miles City. Interment will follow in the Custer County Cemetery in Miles City. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the Range Riders Museum, Route 1 Box 2003, Miles City, MT 59301.
