Lyle Quick, a prominent Circle area farmer/rancher died on his ranch, Wednesday, March 6th, 2013, from a tragic farm accident. He was 74 years old.
Lyle was born on November 29, 1938, on the family farm 12 miles west of Circle. He attended Stoney Butte Country School for the first grade. The family then moved to town where he graduated from grade school and high school. In the second grade, he met Donna Lou Strid. That little blond headed Swede boy was smitten with the big city love bug. He passed Donna a note that said, “I love you – Do you love me? Circle yes or no.” She circled yes, and thus began a love affair that lasted over five decades.
They have four children – Brant and his girlfriend, Charlene Wallace, on the ranch in Circle; Warren and his wife, Jami, from Denver, CO who have three children, Abby, Connor, and Garrett; Karen and her husband, Marty Loudon, from Goodland, KS who have one son, Strid Lyle Deane; Becky and her husband, Jack Mitchek, from Goodland, KS who have three children, Demi, Jaxi, and Jagger.
Lyle was an outstanding high school athlete, and he never lost his love of athletic competition. Anyone who knew Lyle, knew he didn’t like to lose (at anything). He loved watching his children and grandchildren compete. He served on several boards including the Nursing Home, Drug & Alcohol and SCS Board. He was a county commissioner for 13 years. When he ran the first time, he won both the Democratic and the Republican nomination. He was there until he retired.
He was successful on boards, in life, and business for a very simple reason – he wasn’t afraid of or intimidated by anyone or anything. Using very few words of four syllables or more, he eliminated the small talk and cut to the chase. When he said, “Now I’m gonna tell ya somethun,” you knew he meant business.
Lyle had a deep and abiding love for rural Montana. He loved and respected the land, air, water, and people. He was a member of the Northern Plains Resource Council for almost 40 years. When it came to his effectiveness as an advocate for agriculture, whether in Helena or Washington, DC, he was as good as they got.
He was a small town boy that made good – a rancher, farmer, irrigator, husband, father, grandfather and friend. He put together a thousand cow outfit because he had a lot of shares of stock in Vice-Grip, Come-A-Long, Duct Tape and Number Nine Wire, and he made it work, as only Lyle could.
Lyle is survived by one brother, Donnie (Marion) Quick, and three sisters, Donna Yarger, Lila Green, and Helen (Gordy) Waller. One sister-in-law, Edna Quick, and numerous nieces and nephews also survive him. His parents, Floyd and Clarissa Quick, and two brothers, Orville (Myrt) Quick, and Glen Quick, preceded him in death. Also preceded by two brothers-in-law, Bob Yarger and Earl Green. Lyle will be missed by family, neighbors and legions of friends. Should friends desire, memorials may be made to the charity of one’s choice.

Dennis Olson says
Dear Donna, Brant, Becky and the rest of the Quick family,
I am trying to focus a little light in your direction to help push back the darkness during this time of grief.
I last saw Lyle at Jeanne Charter’s funeral almost two years ago, and he seemed as full of life as ever. In short, he still seemed like Lyle, even though that was dark time as well, and even though I had not seen him in many years.
I will never forget Lyle’s generosity and spirit. Not only would he allow me to go hunting on the place every time I asked, but he would often take the time out of his busy day to take me out with him to show me where he had least seen the biggest pronghorn buck.
I also will always remember his leadership in Northern Plains during the 14 years I worked there as an organizer. I remember the time at an Ag Task Force meeting when he came up with the original idea of what would eventually become the WORC Rule to curtail meatpacker price manipulation of captive cattle supplies. We were trying to come up with new strategies, and Lyle said, “Well, what if we could just get the b***ards [IBP and the other Big Meatpacking Companies] to bid against each other.” Everybody agreed it was a good idea, and so started seven-year campaign to do convince the USDA Packers and Stockyards Administration to do just that.
During that campaign I also remember Lyle getting up at a big public meeting in the Miles City Cattle Sales Barn and telling Jim Bob Baker, the head of the Packers and Stockyards Administration, that it was way past time for him to get off his butt and do his job and enforce the antitrust laws to protect ranchers from unfair price manipulation by the big packers.
I will miss Lyle terribly. I will always remember what a fine person and great community leader he was. He will always be an unparalleled inspiration to me.
With Deepest Condolences,
Dennis Olson

Mr. and Mrs. Mitchek and all of Mr. Quick’s family, we met Jack Mitchek at the Western Livestock Auction in Cheyenne, Wyoming a few years ago after he purchased our heifer calves. Jack made several references to his father in law and his time spent in Circle. At one point, Jack made reference to his father in law and said his wife came from such a great and prominent family, he should actually change his last name to Quick! We got quite a kick out of that. Jack gave us one of Demi’s CD’s, we loved it, so it is no wonder Mr. Quick thought so much of his grandkids as well! We are saddened for your loss. Please take care during this time!
Curt and Cathy Fleming says

Don Garfield says
To the Entire Quick Family,
Like everyone, I was shocked to hear of Lyle’s untimely death. He will be missed by us all.
We Garfield kids liked to go down to the Quick Farm to play. I remember the unique basement- like home with a huge dining room table for all the family and hired hands. If I remember correctly, at the far end was a door that went directly into the root cellar. Lyle and I used to play on the roof of that root cellar, as well as jump off the roof of the house. I especially liked the smell of the barn with the new-born pigs.
Donna, reading Lyle’s obituary brought back memories of when he moved to town with the family. When we visited, Lyle would bring me down to Main Street to play war with your brother, Sonny (as we knew him back then), and other kids. I remember Lyle pointing to you in front of the barber shop, and saying “I’m going to marry her some day.” He certainly kept his word!
Our thoughts and prayers are with you all during this very sad time.
Jeff & Cody Runkel says
Donna and family, please know that we are thinking of you. I know there are no words.

Donna and family. …
As a relative, friend, or colleague, Lyle’s passing affects us all.
With his wry smile, a sense of humor was at his beck and call.
His ‘yup’ and grin, marked his turn of a phrase –
these displayed a keen wit that mellowed with age.
As friend, colleague, rancher, leader and family man.
His variety of talents garnered many a fan.
To those who knew him, their lives he has touched.
His presence will be remembered for doing so much.
Memories of good times can soothe the pain,
So we’ll keep him in our hearts until we see him once again.

When your loved one is taken so suddenly, one is left with shock and disbelief. When I heard about Lyle I too could not believe it.
Lyle was a super guy with a super smile and a love for life. I was a year behind you both in high school but we all engaged in many functions in our small town. We went to many out of town functions with band and sports which gave us all a strong bond. All of these memories will keep Lyle’s memory alive.
My heart and prayers go with you dear Donna in this very difficult time. May peace come for you with the comfort/support from family and friends.

To the Quick family- I am so sorry for your loss. But reading the obituary brought such good memories of Lyle (and Eastern Montana) back to me. I always appreciated that he would let me hunt his land whenever I’d ask. It might seem like a small thing, but not to me. And I remember many cold and snowy mornings when my Dad would take me out to feed the cows with Lyle. I know my dad always appreciated Lyle and spoke very well of him. He will be missed. We need more like him.
