In Memory Of

Lyle Sackman, age 71, of Fallon

September 25, 1946 – February 27, 2018

Lyle Sackman, age 71, of Fallon passed away February 27, 2018 at the Glendive Medical Center.

Lyle was born September 25, 1946 in Terry, MT to Andrew and Ruth (Meidinger) Sackman. He attended school in Fallon, Mildred, the Sackman Country School and Terry High School.  His first language was German, and he did not learn the English language until he started school.

When Lyle was 16 years old his father died. He quit high school and took over the responsibilities of the family farm and ranch near Mildred.   In addition to taking on the duties of the farm and ranch, he also quickly assumed the patriarch role in the family at a very young age. He was the oldest of four children, with his youngest sister, Leita, only being two years old at the time of their father’s death.

On June 29, 1968, Lyle married Vera Strobel at Terry, Montana.  They moved to Lyle’s home place where they farmed and ranched for a short time.  They then moved to the Little Fallon Flat where they made their home, continued to farm and ranch, and raised their two children, Amy and Marty.  Lyle resided there until the time of his death.

Lyle loved the ranching and farming life. He enjoyed taking his Harley for a ride and snowmobiling in the mountains.  He also very much enjoyed going to coffee every morning with the Fallon coffee crew where they solved many problems, shared many stories, but most importantly shared a lot of laughs.   Lyle and Vera liked to travel to California, Arizona, and Libby, MT to visit friends and family, but most of all Lyle loved watching his grandkids participate in events and spending time with his family.  Lyle served on the Fallon School Board for many years, and he also served several terms on the Prairie County Grazing Board.

Lyle was known for his big smile, witty sense of humor, and great stories. He was honest and forthright.  There was never a question of where you stood with this great man.

He was preceded in death by his father, Andrew Sackman.

Lyle is survived by his wife, Vera, daughter Amy (Jere) Rolandson of Miles City, son Marty (Barb) Sackman of Fallon, grandchildren, Braden, Gavin, Madison, Casper, Meredith and Milo, mother, Ruth Sackman of Terry, brother Loren (Phyllis) Sackman of Dickinson, ND, sister Lotty Rambur of Terry and sister Leita (Lyle) Zimmerman of Red Lodge as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, March 6, 2018 from 1:00 pm to 6:00 p.m. at Stevenson and Sons Funeral Home in Terry. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, March 7, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. at the Evangelical Church of Fallon in Fallon, MT with burial following in the Fallon Cemetery.

  42. Ron and Cheryl Stern says

    March 4, 2018 at 3:36 pm

Ron and Cheryl Stern sending condolences to Vera, Marty, Amy and family.

We were heartbroken to hear of Lyle’s passing. What a great man!

There are so many words and phrases that describe Lyle such as: hardworking, responsible, family oriented, stubborn (in a good way), resourceful, risk taker, opinionated (never wondered where you stood with Lyle), sense of humor, a tease, intelligent, humble, down to earth, unafraid, hopeful, proud, etc. The list is eternal.

Most importantly, and as the years passed, Lyle grew to appreciate, more and more, his wife Vera. She was the backbone of the family. He knew that and verbalized it often. He knew Very was there for him and was an equal partner to him throughout their many years together.

LYLE SACKMAN, we’re going to miss you. You were the best!

  47. Larry Keltner says

    March 7, 2018 at 8:45 am

It’s a Spring Sunday morning during planting season, I get an early phone call from Lyle about delivery of some fertilizer. After a witty parry of joking insults, I quick mix his requested blend and steam for the Little Flat to meet Lyle prior to meeting the Mathiason boys and their air seeder. I am now at Sackman’s turnoff with the tender truck idling while Vera, constantly pulling on the cuffs of her leather gloves, is on the other side of the pickup “chatting” with Lyle about how this particular event was not on the “to do” list for Sunday. Needless to say, we did not dink around unloading fertilizer that morning!! I sure enjoyed getting to know Lyle while I worked at the Farmers Union. He was the perfect type of ornery.

  48. Stan Pehl says

    March 13, 2018 at 9:00 am

To the Sackman family, I was very sorry to hear of Lyle’s passing and I wish to pass along my condolences. I have fond memories of Lyle as well. Between him and my dad Charlie, there was seldom a serious moment when we were together. He will be missed, for sure.
