Manuel was born in Zenith, North Dakota to Emanuel and Katherine (Armburst) Dukart on November 23, 1918. He was baptized as Emmanuel Benjamin Dukart, but always went by Manuel.
Manuel was a middle child, and said he never felt like an older brother or a younger brother, even though he had 13 brothers and sisters. Manuel lived in Zenith, ND until he was five years old and then moved with his family to The Old Home Place between NewHradec and Manning. He attended Old Denthill School for grades one through eight, however skipped grade six, because they thought I knew more than the others did., and I was pretty good at math as Manuel explained. During grade school and after, he worked on a farm for his dad and his brother, Valentine. As a young man, Manuel enjoyed breaking horses; farming and ranching were also very important to him.
In 1941, Manuel enlisted in the Army. He left the United States on March 18, 1942 from Pier 42 on the ship President Cooledge. He arrived at Melbourne, Australia on April 10th. Manuel was an infantry rifleman, cook, mess sergeant and machine gunner. He held the rank of staff sergeant when discharged from the Philippines in 1945. He had served in the Guadalcanal, Guam and the Philippines. His favorite part of being in the service was being a Mess Sergeant.
On November 6, 1945 he and Barbara Stroh were married at St. Josephs Catholic Church in Dickinson, ND. They began their life together on the Brew Place north of Dickinson until 1950 when they moved to a farm near Glendive where JR Dukart now lives. One year later, in 1951, they moved to the Voge place, where they lived until 1993. Then they moved to Terry, MT. Manuel's granddaughter Tristy and her family now live on the farm. Along with farming and ranching, he and Barb raised range cattle and dairy cows. Manuel was well-known for his homemade pork sausage, which his family enjoyed getting together to help make. Manuel and Barbonce had an adventurous streak in 1955 and moved to Anaheim, CA, near his brother Mark, where he worked for North American Aviation. After a year, Montana lured them back to their farm where they raised their two daughters, Cindy and Joyleen, while they farmed and ranched.Manuel was a member of the Sacred Heart Church in Terry, VFW Club in Fallon, American Legion Post 32 of Terry, and the Moose Lodge in Glendive.
